Harry Geller of Princeton, Ill., has been offered the position of Othello Community Hospital administrator. He would replace Jerry Lane, who resigned in May, citing a difference of opinion with the hospital’s new board members. Geller has 20 years of hospital administration experience, much of it in small hospitals.

The Golden Age Club will hold its annual Free Plant Exchange at 10 a.m. today at its center across from the Post Office. Folks can bring their bulbs, plants, trees, berry bushes and even houseplants to trade or share. Clubbers say those whose gardens were wiped out by deer should get some new plants - so the deer will have something to eat next summer.

The city has a net pen program to keep the fishing waters in Banks Lake a profitable place to drop a line. Volunteers recently took time to clean and repair the nets in anticipation of 60,000 hatchery trout - 15,000 more than last year. Volunteers will feed the fish through the winter so they can be let go when they mature.

“Push for the Playground” has been kicked off to raise money for safer playground equipment. If elementary school kids collect 50 pounds of coins this month, Superintendent Mark Stedman and teacher LaMarr Larmer will dress as women. The kids are primed for the challenge, but say the men don’t have to shave their legs.

Stevens County Fire Protection District 12 needs a volunteer chief as soon as possible. “The major items needing coordination are vehicle repair, training, policies and procedures, equipment acquisition, station definition and coordination with other fire districts,” says district spokesman Dan Lester. Whitman County
Because of a national shortage of influenza vaccine, the County Health Department has pushed back immunization dates to Oct. 24, 25 and 27. The agency is limiting the vaccine to those at highest risk, including adults 65 and older and those with chronic health problems. Normally the department issues about 1,500 doses in the fall. But now only 50 doses are on hand, with 750 on back order.

“Landscaping for Fire Prevention” will help forest homeowners modify their homes and landscapes to make them less likely to burn and easier for firefighters to access. The Kootenai Humane Society welcomed volunteer Pam Murphy to the board of directors. The society says that for three years, Pam has been an invaluable volunteer and is noted for her dedication to the animals.

“Visions of Education for the 21st Century: Facing the Challenges of Cultural and Tribal Sovereignty” is the theme of a Native American conference at the University of Idaho, Nov. 1-4. Two speakers, panel discussions, a movie series, a teacher curriculum workshop and a powwow will highlight the event. All events are free and open to the public.

City council members on Monday appointed Rick Hendricks to replace Chuck Padula, who resigned Sept. 11. Also, the Smelterville Lion’s Club gave the city a riding lawnmower valued at $3,700, and the council finished the process of gaining Gem Community Status. The status will be finalized in about a month, according to Mayor Tom Benson.
