WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

The migrant student population at Othello Schools will participate in a scientific study on computer-based language. Migrant students make up 25 percent of the student body here. Students will be on the computer up to 100 minutes per day, with language programs designed to help them learn to read English. The programmer, Scientific Learning, feels it can give students more than one year’s jump on reading in just eight weeks.

Ferry County Republic

The Republic School Booster Club is looking for a few good members. The club raises money to support academic programs, as well as activities such as academic decathlon, math club, Honor Society and music. Club members do not have to have a student in school. Dues are $5 for individuals and $10 for families.

Grant County Moses Lake

While fishing in Moses Lake recently, Ronnie L. Mulder pulled an aging couple to safety as their van sank. Robert G. St. Claire, 73, and his wife, Thelma, 72, were attempting to back a boat trailer in at a launch ramp when the tires lost their grip due to algae growth. The van slid backward and was nearly submerged when Mulder rescued the couple.

Lincoln County Davenport

The Trinity Praise Band plans to rock heaven and Earth tonight in its R-october Jesus Jam. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will include worship music from Sonic Flood, Audio Adrenaline and Rich Mullins. Special guests Chris George and Roz Kruger from DCY will be featured. The event is free to all who wish to sing or just enjoy the music.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Local school Superintendent Shirl Nadeau wants to know if residents think a school levy is needed. “After all loan costs are paid for, there is a projected $167,523 in reserves,” she reports. Nadeau wants to establish a list of needs that haven’t been budgeted, such as textbooks.

Spokane County Liberty Lake

Liberty Lake city boosters will host a forum Tuesday for anyone with questions about the effort to incorporate. Residents of the proposed city will vote on the ballot measure Nov. 7. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Lake Sewer and Water District building, 22510 E. Mission.

Stevens County Colville

The city is investigating whether a garbage program would be popular and cost-effective. The city’s contract with Waste Management expires in March, leaving it free to look into other options for garbage pickup. The subject first came up when angry citizens complained about paying a standard garbage fee reflective of a 90-gallon Dumpster. The city is also looking into rates for 30- and 60-gallon receptacles.

Whitman County Pullman

The Coalition for Women Students at Washington State University has scheduled a rally to Take Back the Night at 7 p.m. Thursday. The annual event addresses issues of violence towards women. This year’s march starts in front of Todd Hall and ends with a bonfire across from Beasley Coliseum on Stadium Way.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

A joint Timber Plus and City Council downtown revitalization project workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at city hall. Larry Comer will have cost estimates. Geographical limits also will be discussed.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Cross-cultural dancing rooted in African American traditions will be performed by the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance group tonight at 8 p.m. at the Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave. Tickets are $15; students $8. The performance will be presented by the Pend Oreille Arts Council.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The school board extended its application deadline for the vacant superintendent’s position to Jan. 1, 2001, because only five applications and 14 inquires for the position were received. Jon Schwarts, interim superintendent, said the school board should have a new superintendent by March or April. Also, the Oct. 24 meeting is rescheduled for Oct. 30.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

A seminar titled The Fine Art of Catch and Release relates to recruiting, hiring, motivating, retaining, documenting and firing employees. The seminar will be presented by Job Service Friday at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Registration costs $49. For more information, call Valerie Fields at (208) 777-9202.

Latah County Moscow

Last year sixth-graders at Lena Whitmore Elementary School started designing a brochure for people who have to spend hours waiting at Gritman Medical Center. The brochure includes a map of area restaurants, gift shops, fun places to go and a list of business that deliver. Judy Mock and Molly Pannkuk’s classes worked on the brochure, which was sponsored by a grant from the Palouse Local Partnership’s School to Work Program.

Shoshone County Kellogg

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has hired Matrix Consulting Group to facilitate development of community consensus on cleanup issues in the Coeur d’Alene River Basin. Residents are asked to participate in the process. If interested, call Kathy Johnson at (208) 783-5781.

Lincoln County Libby

Stefani Hicswa, interim director of the Lincoln County Campus, will lead a class titled Change is Great … You Go First! from 1-5 p.m. Monday at Blacke Hall 140. Hicswa will help participants learn how to plan for change, strategize and capitalize. Registration is $54, call (406) 756-3832.
