Mead Second To Repeat As Crossover Champ
Mead became the second repeat champion in the seven-year history of the Performance Crossover Classic volleyball tournament on Saturday night, topping Kentlake 15-11, 7-15, 15-9 in the championship match at North Central.
The Panthers, defending State 4A champions, went 9-0 during pool play at Ferris. They also swept Fife and Bethel at NC, leading up to the title match.
Mead defeated Ferris for last year’s Crossover title.
Ferris (1996-97) is the other team to have won back-to-back titles at the tourney originated by Lewis and Clark coach Buzzie Welch and retired Shadle Park coach Linda Sheridan.
Past champions made a strong showing. Ferris won its pool at home and placed fourth, losing the third-place match to Bethel 7-15, 15-12, 15-10.
LC, the ‘94 champ, won its pool at home and placed sixth.
Fife, the ‘95 champ and defending State 3A champion, took eighth place. Gonzaga Prep defeated the Trojans 13-15, 15-10, 15-12 to wrap up seventh place.
The 39-team tournament was played at NC, LC, Ferris, G-Prep and Shadle.
Shadle defeated Fife in pool play at Shadle, yet the Highlanders finished fourth in their four-team pool.
Smaller schools that came up big were Lakeside and Colfax. Lakeside, the defending State 2A champion, placed 10th. Colfax, runner-up in last year’s State 1A tournament, finished 14th after close losses to 4A Eisenhower and Kamiakin.
Nicole Jones totaled 10 kills and six aces to lead Medical Lake (5-5) to a 3-0 sweep in a Great Northern League match at Deer Park. Lisa Shaw had a match-high four blocks for the Stags (1-10).
Cross country
Ferris edged Mead 79-84 to win the boys meet at the Lava Bear Classic in Bend, Ore. Fourth-place Andrew Ice, who finished the 5,000 meters in 15 minutes, 39 seconds, led Ferris in an event that included Oregon’s top two teams, Bend and Klamath Union. Brothers Chris (15:42) and Jesse Fayant (15:55) placed sixth and eighth for Mead.
Girls soccer
Emily Mues scored at 77 minutes to lift Moscow (12-6, 6-4) to a 3-2 win at Coeur d’Alene (11-3-3, 6-1-3) that ended the league season for both.
