WSU Has A Perfect Weekend
Washington State University’s volleyball team completed its first Pacific-10 Conference weekend sweep this fall by stomping Oregon 15-7, 15-5, 15-10 Saturday night in Pullman.
LaToya Harris had 13 kills while hitting .370, and added a match-best three aces to help the Cougars (12-6, 3-6) follow up Friday night’s victory over Oregon State.
WSU has gone 3-2 since starting the Pac-10 season 0-4.
Zanda Bautre added eight kills and eight digs for the Cougars. Melissa Boyle also had eight kills and Kortney Jamtaas had nine digs.
Halie Mazza had 10 kills and hit .261 for the Ducks (7-10, 0-9).
Eastern Washington ran its home winning streak to 22 matches with a 3-1 victory over Portland State in a Big Sky Conference match.
Robyn Sonju-Felder had 11 kills, Janelle Ruen nine digs and Michelle Etter nine blocks for the Eagles (9-8, 6-4).
EWU allowed only seven points in the three games it won. The Vikings (0-19, 0-10), who had won two games all year, took the second game 16-14.
Stacy Rouwenhorst and Melissa Snow combined for 22 kills and fifth-ranked Pepperdine (15-3, 5-0) rolled to a 3-0 West Coast Conference sweep at Gonzaga.
Jennifer Fompa added 10 digs and eight blocks for the Waves, who hit .355 as a team.
GU (4-15, 0-6) lost its 10th consecutive match, but came close in the first game, when it trailed 13-11, and second, when it came within 10-7. Heather Osberg and Abby Cullen combined for 25 Bulldogs kills.
Kristen Turner had 10 kills while hitting .529, and Gretchen Smith added 14 digs to lead Whitworth (12-7, 7-3) to a 3-0 sweep of Pacific in a Northwest Conference match at Forest Grove, Ore.
The Pirates built leads of 6-0 in the first game, 8-2 in the second and 7-1 in the clincher. Chris Beck had eight digs and seven assists for the Boxers (2-11, 0-9).
Tovah Trimming and Beth Vercic were all-tournament selections as Community Colleges of Spokane finished third at the Columbia Basin Crossover Tournament in Pasco.
CCS won three of four matches on the final day to finish 5-2 at the tournament. The Sasquatch are 19-16 for the season.
Mt. Hood defeated the host Hawks in the title match.
Men’s soccer
Curtis Christiansen assisted on two goals to help North Idaho (7-3-2, 7-2-1) to a 4-1 win over visiting Everett CC in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.
Ben Lugar’s goal at 57 minutes, a side kick to the center, snapped a 1-all tie. The Cardinals also defeated the Trojans (1-9 NWAACC) 5-0 four weeks ago.
Women’s soccer
Carmen Zobel assisted on a pair of first-half goals, and seven players scored to carry North Idaho (10-1-2, 9-1) to a 7-0 win over visiting Everett CC in the NWAACC.
Chrissy Walsh, Bryn Devlin and Coby Meikle all had one goal and one assist for the Cardinals, who haven’t lost since Sept. 20. NIC also defeated the Trojans (0-10) 7-0 four weeks ago.
Carmen Eastwood scored at 15 minutes on a defensive mixup, and Skagit Valley (3-6-1) held on for a 2-1 victory over CC Spokane in an NWAACC match at SFCC.
