Dorthy Root Post Falls
Service for Dorthy May Root, 69, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.
Mrs. Root, who was born in Neodesha, Kan., died Wednesday.
She moved with her family to Castlerock, Wash., and Potlatch, Idaho. She attended Moscow (Idaho) High School.
She married Charlie Root in 1946, and they moved to Post Falls in 1959.
She graduated from nursing school and received a licensed practical nurse certificate in 1971. She moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1983.
She retired from nursing in 1993 and moved back to Post Falls.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidering and ceramics.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years; two sons, Les Root of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Mike Root of Spokane; three daughters, Bonnie Root, Deanna Buchmann and Leah Sharp, all of Post Falls; two brothers, J. Mike Holmes and James Holmes; and two sisters, Emma Baxter and Edith Carlson.
Orville Rowe Coeur d’Alene
Memorial service for Orville S. Rowe, 86, was held Friday at the Coeur d’Alene Church of the Nazarene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rowe, who was born in Usk, Wash., died Tuesday.
He began a logging career at the age of 17 in Headquarters, Idaho. He later moved to Coeur d’Alene, and in 1983 he retired from the timber industry.
Mr. Rowe was a member of the Nazarene Church. He enjoyed camping, gardening and outdoor recreation.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two daughters, Sandi Dunn of Sacramento, Calif., and Marla Wolgast of Seattle; two sons, Bill Rowe of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Ronald Rowe of Grand Coulee; two stepdaughters, Tina Christie of Williamsburg, Va., and Donna Brewster of Wigton, Scotland; a stepson, David Bangle of Sandpoint; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Jesse Curry Spokane
No service will be held for Jesse G. Curry, 49. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Wilcox, Ariz., Mr. Curry died Tuesday.
His family moved to Spokane in 1959 and he graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1968.
He worked as a miner in Butte, Mont., and as a plant superintendent in Arizona.
Mr. Curry moved back to Spokane 20 years ago.
Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Dorothy Curry of McNeal, Ariz.; a brother, Jeff Curry of Spokane; and a sister, Bell Curry of McNeal.
LaVerne Prophet Spokane
Graveside service for LaVerne W. Prophet, 84, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Garfield (Wash.) Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
An 80-year Spokane resident, Mr. Prophet died Wednesday. He was born in Spokane.
He served in the Army National Guard, and from 1935 to 1939 was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1940 he married Elma Million.
Mr. Prophet began working for Northern Pacific Railroad, which became Burlington Northern in 1944. He retired in 1976 as a yardmaster at Yardley.
He served in the Army Reserves as a sergeant from 1955 to 1975.
Mr. Prophet was a member of First Free Methodist Church and Gideon’s International.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years; three sons, Larry Prophet of Spokane, Gerald Prophet of Post Falls and John Prophet of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Karen Kennedy of Bremerton; a brother, Gail Prophet of Yucaipa, Calif.; a sister, Maxine Wildman of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
David Harold Spokane
Memorial service for David Harold, 37, was held Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Harold died Tuesday.
He graduated from West Valley High School.
Mr. Harold was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Village.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Evelyn and William Thomas, and a sister, Mary Thomas, all of Spokane; and two brothers, Michael Harold of Cheney and Steven Harold of Edmonton, Alberta.
Lucia (Bruno) Gavette Spokane
Funeral Mass for Lucia (Bruno) Gavette, 49, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Pines Cemetery. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Cozenza, Italy, Mrs. Gavette died Wednesday.
She was a 28-year Spokane resident.
Mrs. Gavette worked as a manager for Burger King on East Sprague and was recently transferred to the Liberty Lake Burger King.
Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Robert; two sons, Charles and Nathaniel Gavette, and a daughter, Trina Usher, all of Spokane; her father, Natalie Bruno of Kamloops, British Columbia; three brothers, Tony, Sam and Frank Bruno, all of Kamloops; and a grandson.
Marie Dolle Spokane
Funeral Mass for Marie S. Dolle, 81, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Miss Dolle died Thursday.
She graduated from Marycliff High School in 1936.
Miss Dolle worked for the Spokane International Railroad, which later became Union Pacific, for 23 years. She then worked as a supervisor for the Department of Social and Health Services. She retired in 1980.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Miss Dolle is survived by three brothers, William, Robert and Theophilo Dolle, and a sister, Margaret Spinelli, all of Spokane.
Mary Smith Coeur d’Alene
No service will be held for Mary E. Smith, 86, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Smith, who was born in Illinois, died Wednesday.
She lived in Illinois and in 1942 married Walter Smith.
She and her husband moved to Mullan, Idaho, in 1944. Shee was a homemaker.
They moved to Hayden Lake in 1981 and to Coeur d’Alene in 1996.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years; a son, Steven Smith of Moscow; two daughters, Mary Jacobs of Coeur d’Alene and Martha Schatzka of Greenacres; a sister, Florence Milholland of Illinois; and five grandchildren.
Pearl Costigan Spokane
Visitation for Pearl Elizabeth Costigan, 91, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mrs. Costigan, a 38-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.
She was born in Lewiston.
Mrs. Costigan worked as a sales clerk in the retail sales industry.
Her husbands, M.L. Markham, John Scott and Edward Costigan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Donald Scott of Spokane; a brother, John Maund of Wilder, Idaho; a sister, Kitty Hoisington of Juliaetta, Idaho; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Stanley Bannister Colfax, Wash.
Memorial service for W. Stanley Bannister, a longtime Colfax resident, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Colfax United Methodist Church. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bannister, who was born in Weston, Ore., died Wednesday. He was 82.
He married Helen Davis in 1941.
Mr. Bannister was a farmer in the Colfax area and also worked for the Soil Conservation Service for 25 years. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of Colfax United Methodist Church and the Moscow Star Garnet Rock Club.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lee Bannister, and a sister, Lucille Mader, both of Colfax.
Vernon Roberts Spokane
Private burial for Vernon G. Roberts, 80, will be held at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. The Neptune Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Cheney, Mr. Roberts died Oct. 5.
He graduated from high school in Kingston, Idaho, and served in the Marine Corps as a cook during World War II.
Mr. Roberts worked as a carpenter.
He lived in the Silver Valley until moving to Spokane 12 years ago.
There are no surviving family members.
