Smith & Wesson is cutting about 15 percent of its work force, blaming slumping sales and a boycott by buyers angry over its gun-safety deal with the government.

Shares of Honeywell International Inc. rose sharply late Thursday amid news the maker of heavy industrial machinery is talking with United Technologies Corp. about a merger reportedly worth $40 billion.

AltaVista Co. CEO Rod Schrock resigned Thursday. Schrock, 41, who will retain his stock options in AltaVista, will remain an adviser to the company.

Shares of Sepracor Inc. plunged Thursday following news that pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. had pulled the plug on the companies’ plan to develop a successor to Lilly’s blockbuster antidepressant Prozac. Lilly ended its licensing and development agreement with Sepracor for R-Fluoxetine, a generic version of Prozac. Sepracor stock finished down $33.75 to finish at $87.06.
