WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

The City Council recently passed a stricter noise ordinance, which considers excessive noise a type of pollution with harmful effects. Violators will pay $80 for the first offense. In residential areas, 55 decibels is the threshold, while 70 decibels will be allowed in industrial parts of town. The local high school marching band will be granted an exception.

Ferry County Republic

Despite a decrease in the number of building permits countywide, the public works department says permit revenues are up over 1999. Total permit revenue for 1999 was $18,032, just shy of 2000’s $19,108 to date. Residential housing permits for both years tally 23, but commercial construction was down by five projects.

Grant County Royal City

Jenks Bros. Orchards has entered a 28.1-ounce Gala apple in the Royal Review’s largest-apple contest, which translates into one big pie. The contest’s results will not be final for a few more days, and rumor has it an area grower was going to bring in an apple weighing more than two pounds. The winner receives a $25 gift certificate, bragging rights and a front-page picture in the Review.

Lincoln County Odessa

The Odessa Lions Club did all the work, but the student body reaped the profit. The Lions not only provided workers at the Odessa Tiger Concession stand last year, but stocked, shopped and cleaned up after all home games. The profits and the sum the school district paid them to provide the service were recently donated back to the school. The club donated $2,000 in books, as well as $1,500 in new equipment such as a pizza oven, hot dog machine and chili and cheese dispenser. Another $1,800 went to various items such as software and a baseball equipment storage shed.

Pend Oreille County Newport

The Newport High School football stadium will also house the Mericom cellular tower. The Newport School Board agreed to lease property at the stadium for a 200-foot tower for $600 per month. The company eyed the football stadium because the tower wouldn’t be an eyesore in that area as it would blend with the stadium’s lighting.

Spokane County Spokane

Four people have applied to fill a vacant seat on the East Valley School Board. The board will interview all four - salesman Dwayne Schrieber, firefighter Jerry Shaw, home care supervisor Sandra Smith and former Girl Scout leader Donna Wasson - this month before choosing a replacement for Marie Francis, who resigned recently after moving out of the school district. The board is expected to announce its choice at its Nov. 14 meeting.

Stevens County Kettle Falls

The Police Department welcomes Audie Dixon to the force. Dixon, a 24-year law enforcement veteran, was hired to fill the vacant fourth officer slot. Chief Tony Harbolt says he is impressed with some of the skills Dixon brings to the department, including firearms training and field training. Dixon has worked for the city of Chewelah and is a former Ferry County deputy.

Whitman County Pullman

The Pullman Presbyterian Women’s Association is presenting an Autumn Home Tour from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday to benefit a variety of local charities including the Community Hospice on the Palouse and the local crisis line. The event will feature at least five fine homes around town. Maps and shoe covers for the tour will be available at the Ridge Pointe Clubhouse, 1400 S.E. Fancy Free Drive between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information, call 332-2659.

Benewah County Heyburn

Many volunteers are still needed for the Parent Teacher Organization’s Halloween carnival set for 5-8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the gym. The event will include 15 game booths, a cakewalk, pumpkin carving contest and a costume contest. A football throw and a craft booth will be new features. The PTO will also be gathering coats and nonperishable food items. Tickets for games will be given in exchange for food and coats or sold for 25 cents or 5 for $1. To volunteer, call (208) 245-6962

Bonner County Sandpoint

“Scrambled McManus,” several stories from the Patrick F. McManus comedies, will be performed at 8 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Panida Theater. “The Mummy,” “My First Deer,” “The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw” and “The Bike” will be included. Tickets are $13, or $8 for kids 17 and under.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Boundary County jail inmate trustee Robert Waltering found a wallet containing a substantial amount of cash at the court house and gave it to a county employee. The wallet belonged to Donald Collins III of Hot Springs, Mont. Collins, a temporary employee for the U.S. Forest Service, was notified and returned to claim his wallet, according to a sheriff’s office employee.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Rob Elder, owner of the Post Falls Hot Rod Cafe, will open Fast Burger restaurant on Monday. Fast Burger is located in the building which previously housed Boston Market, at the corner of Neider Avenue and U.S. Highway 95. Elder says the restaurant will feature hamburgers, fries, soft drinks and ice cream cones.

Latah County Moscow

Mike Wilson, 15, waited for five years for his dream of a local skate park to come true, and last Friday it opened. The 7,500-square-foot park features two half pipes, two pyramids, a fun box, a low box, a 5-foot ramp, a curved quarter pipe and some steel rails. The park will be open dawn to dusk year-round. A grand opening celebration will be held in the spring.

Shoshone County Kellogg/Pinehurst

A contest between two drugstores in the Silver Valley netted the Community Action Agency food bank about 1,400 pounds of food. Employees at Gary’s Drug and Gift Center in Pinehurst barely won against employees of their competitor, Sunnyside Drug in Kellogg.

Lincoln County Libby

Access to school computer labs during designated hours is free. Brian Lisle will be available to answer questions and help people learn to access the Internet, do basic word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and more. The lab schedule for after-school hours is 3:30-6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays at the high school; Wednesdays at the middle school; 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays at Asa Wood, Tuesdays at McGrade and Thursdays at Plummer. The computers are also available anytime school is in session.
