Simpson Gains 362 Yards For G-Prep
REPLAY: 10-24-00; C2 Gonzaga Prep defeated Mt. Spokane 42-15 in their Greater Spokane League football game Friday night. The Wildcats scored on 62- and 17-yard passing plays from Joel Clark to Jesse Clark, the latter coming in the final minutes. The game score was incorrect and final touchdown was inadvertently left off the scoring summary in Saturday’s report.
Greater Spokane League
Ryan Simpson got a little good-natured ribbing from his quarterback this week.
The Gonzaga Prep running back was told to hit the hole a little quicker by John Stiffter. He made a conscious effort to do that Friday night and the results weren’t good, or even great.
Try spectacular.
Simpson rushed for 362 yards and five touchdowns on 27 carries, breaking the Spokane rushing record of 355 yards.
The Bullpups coasted to a 42-7 win over Mt. Spokane at Albi Stadium. The old record was 355 yards, established by Central Valley’s Tyree Clowe two years ago against Mt. Spokane.
“The offensive line was huge,” Simpson said. “Anyone could have run through those.”
Simpson had touchdown runs of 61 and 77 yards in the first quarter as Prep (4-3 overall, 4-2 Greater Spokane League) opened a 21-0 lead. He added a 19-yard touchdown in the second quarter and had 234 yards at halftime. He closed the scoring with touchdown runs of 17 and 12 yards in the third quarter.
A 62-yard touchdown pass from Joel Clark to Jesse Clark accounted for almost one-third of the offense for Mt. Spokane (0-7, 0-6).
Central Valley 42, Ferris 18
Chase Rasmussen rushed for 223 yards and four touchdowns as the Bears (4-2, 4-3) struck early to defeat the Saxons (2-4, 3-4) at CV.
The Bears cashed in on a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff, a good punt return by Brad Wagner and another fumble to lead 21-0 less than halfway through the first quarter.
“The offensive line was opening huge holes,” Rasmussen said. “The turf was all wet, it was a good night to run the ball. The coach gave me some big old monster spikes.”
University 35, Shadle Park 7
Don Turner caught seven passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns and Bruce Hart ran for 119 yards and a touchdown as the Titans (5-1, 5-1) kept pace with the league leaders by whipping the Highlanders (1-6, 1-6) at Albi.
University used a balanced attack, rushing for 150 yards and getting 165 passing from quarterback Chris Gross. Gross connected on 9 of 11 throws.
Mead 16, East Valley 6
Lars Slind broke off a 63-yard TD run in the third quarter as the first-place Panthers (6-1, 6-1) beat the Knights (1-6, 1-5) at East Valley.
After Mead took a 2-0 lead, EV grabbed the lead before quarterback Wes Henry and running back Jarred Wolfe combined on a 67-yard touchdown pass to make it 9-6 at halftime.
Mead held league-leading running back Andrew Ettinger to 38 yards on 19 carries.
