Adams County Ritzville

This year’s Mennonite Country Auction raised just under $94,000. Among the highlights, 12 quilts sold for $1,000 to $3,000 each, and a handmade rocking chair from Nicaragua brought in $2,100. Anna Franz, 16, baked two huckleberry pies for the auction, where they were sold for $70 each. Her raisin pie also was a hit, going for $100.

A symbolic loaf of bread to feed the hungry sold for a record $3,675. The money goes to world missions and disaster relief. The annual auction and sale of German food, crafts and other items is held on the Menno Mennonite Church grounds 20 miles west of Ritzville.

Ferry County Republic

Mountain pass reports became available Oct. 15 from the Washington State Department of Transportation. The toll-free, statewide number is 1-800-695-ROAD. Sherman Pass, among others in the state, is featured on the recording. The state also runs a Web site, complete with video of each pass, at www.wsdot.wa.gov.

Lincoln County Davenport

Some landowners here are tired of trespassing hunters. Farmer Robert Boleneus says hunters have been known to shoot at deer behind his barn, 20 yards from his rural home. “All I want is the same consideration they’d expect me to give their home,” he said.

Pend Oreille County Diamond Lake

An estimated 12,000 baby trout will be wintering in pens at Diamond Lake. The trout are part of the lake’s campaign to restock the population for fishing each spring. A group of local volunteers will feed the fish daily to prepare them for release in April or May. The 20-by-20-foot net pen was constructed with donations, and is located in Boy Scout Bay.

Spokane County Spokane

A new self-service dog washing shop called U-Shampooch recently opened on Cheney-Spokane Road just east of U.S. Highway 195.

Stevens County Chewelah

Avista Utilities will conduct a scheduled power outage today from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Red Marble, Smola and Browns Lake areas. Also without power will be Mountain View, Offerdahl and Caffell roads.

Whitman County

Five towns are competing for a share of a $100,000 economic development grant that comes from the state sales tax. They’re asking for money for an airport fueling station in Tekoa, a skate park in Colfax, park improvement in Oakesdale, fire hydrants in Garfield and a pump station in Uniontown. County commissioners will soon make the final decision.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

School trustees voted to hire five teachers aides in an effort to improve reading test scores for kindergarten through third-grade students, according to program director Bobbi Smith. Monique Huddleston, Shannon Cloud, Loretta Lillemo, Vicki Charles and Connie Bisson will use flashcards, work with small groups and read to and with students. A federal grant will pay the aides’ wages during the three-week trial.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Nine Lake Pend Oreille School District teachers were awarded grants from the governor’s innovative grant program. The teachers are Shannon Delewese, Kathleen Taylor, Betty Collins, Diane Travers-Lucanto, Joyce DeLa Vergne, Tiga Burright, Georgina Puailoa Mike Lefler, Susan Wall and Ruthie Stevens. The program assists teachers in implementing creative classroom innovations.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

North Water and Sewer District violated state environmental regulations by failing to routinely monitor water for coliform bacteria and failing to notify customers it wasn’t done, according to the Department of Environmental Quality.

Kootenai County Harrison

Local clown, Dawn Pearson, won three medals at the Northwest Festival of Clowns held in Olympia recently. She took first place for a skit she wrote, the first she’d ever written.

She took second for her ensemble, including props, routine and makeup, and she took third place in a group skit competition. Pearson’s clown business is called Clowning Around with Sunrise and she participates in Kootenai Medical Center’s Smile Squad program.

Latah County Moscow

A formation of a volunteer services center will be discussed during a public forum set for 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Eastside Marketplace.

The forum will be divided into three workshops with more than 150 representatives of volunteer agencies present.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Silver Valley women who are majoring in education and are graduate students or upperclassmen may apply for a $200 scholarship from the Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
