Air pollution has sparked a partial ban on the use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves in Spokane County.

The Spokane County Air Pollution Control Authority issued a “condition yellow” alert Thursday. That means wood can be burned only in stoves certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Several days of stagnant weather has trapped smoke and dust in the air over Spokane, said Ron Edgar of the pollution control authority. Continued poor conditions could lead to a “condition red” alert, in which nearly all burning is prohibited.

The restrictions are in effect until further notice. Updates are available by calling 477-4710.
