WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The Sheriff’s Department hopes to save deputies time at accident scenes. The department has invested in a “total station,” a tool that allows deputies to survey and plot an accident to within hundredths of an inch. Information from an accident is loaded into a computer, which recreates the scene. The department purchased the tool for $1,400, a fraction of the retail cost, at a surplus auction.

Ferry County Republic

County commissioners recently appointed Dave Scott to the county’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee. He will begin immediately, with his term ending Dec. 31, 2001. Also, the county has contracted with the city of Spokane to collect and dispose of household hazardous waste from the county.

Lincoln County Harrington

The Odessa Union Warehouse has volunteered to shut off its new fans between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., as neighbors have complained they cannot sleep due to noise. The City Council has asked the EPA to perform a decibel reading on the fans to see whether they are within city standards.

Pend Oreille County Cusick

The local school district has its Safe Schools team in place. Greg Johnston will coordinate grant monies. Pend Oreille Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Garner will act as school resource officer. Heading up counseling duties is Norm Noggle. The Safe Schools program came about in response to several school shootings nationwide. The federal government is funding the program here, with Newport and Selkirk also taking part.

Spokane County West Plains

Clinics in Cheney and Medical Lake are offering flu shots by appointment. While other facilities in Spokane County have reported shortages, clinic officials said they have normal levels of the vaccination. Call Cheney Medical Center at 235-6151 for information.

Whitman County Pullman

Washington State University’s 77-year-old Livestock Pavilion was rescued by students who protested plans to demolish the oldest agriculture building on campus. Now the university is trying to decide how to handle the building’s hazardous lead-based paint problem. The building holds a large arena and is the site of various campus activities, including the spring plant sale on Moms Weekend.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Middle school students are earning money for a trip to Washington, D.C., in June by raffling a $300 tire set and a snowboard, and collecting aluminum cans. Tickets are $1 or six for $5 and may be purchased from students. The winners will be announced at the school’s final home football game.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The Bonner Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on two issues: Anthony and Janet Quinn are requesting permission to subdivide 30 acres into two residential lots, and Argosy Trust representatives are requesting to subdivide 26 acres into three lots. The hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the boardroom of the Bonner County Courthouse.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Singers are needed for the annual Christmas concert Dec. 15 and Dec. 17. Everyone over 12 years old is welcome. Auditions are not required. The concert will feature a new cantata by Joseph and Pamela Martin titled “The Winter Rose.” If interested in joining, call Vicki Blake at (208) 267-3294.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Hayden Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars is having a dedication of all service flags and the new Avenue of Flags at the Coeur d’ Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Nov 3. City officials and politicians are invited.

Latah County Moscow

Moscow High School had no cheerleaders last year because so many girls chose to participate in sports or the dance team. This year Jenny McPhie, Courtney Berglund, Violet McComas, Randi Douglas and Julia Baird joined to form a squad to bring school spirit back to the games.
