People

There’s a fine line, apparently, between Spokane’s favorite and least favorite people. That would explain why at least two of the same names showed up on the lists of “Favorite Local Talking Head” and “Most Irritating Local Personality.” We’ll have to declare Randy Shaw, the veteran KHQ-6 news anchor, the overall winner of the People category, since he showed up in five separate lists, which must be some kind of a record. He did not, however, show up in one of our newly created categories this year: “Most Beautiful Local Person.” Nadine Woodward, his newscast competitor at KREM-2, placed first.

Wow, were there a lot of votes cast in THIS category. It came down to a photo finish between two people with a knack for driving people crazy, KGA-AM talk show host Rick Miller and Spokane City Councilman Steve Eugster. Miller out-ranted his frequent radio guest by a hair. All of the other top vote-getters are TV newscasters.

Voters ignored most of the actors who toil at local theaters, and went with a former Spokanite who operates on the much bigger stage of network TV. Craig T. Nelson won this category even though his new CBS television show, “The District,” hadn’t even debuted when the votes were cast. It was a tight race between Nelson and an actress who works on both the national and local stages: Oscar-winner Patty Duke.
