Dick Panabaker

Resume: Republican incumbent commissioner, age 59 … this is Panabaker’s third general election after serving four-year and two-year terms … served seven years as mayor of Hayden … serves on the Hayden Area Sewer Board … owned an upholstery shop for 25 years … earned his G.E.D. and attended one semester of junior college … family moved to the area in 1919, moved to Spokane during World War II and moved back in 1950 … married to Karen for 36 years, two grown children.

Why running: “I’m pretty proud of what we’ve accomplished,” he said, about the county’s upgrades to the administration building and other projects. “Where we were really in trouble before, I think a lot of these things have prepared Kootenai County for the 21st century. I want to continue that effort.”

Issues: Wants to continue work with state and federal Environmental Protection Agency as chair of the Coeur d’Alene River Basin Commission, which is seeking cost-effective ways to solve pollution problems … wants to implement the Rathdrum Prairie Project findings to help guide growth on the prairie.
