PepsiCo Inc. is adding Lizard Fuel, Karma, Zen Blend and about 27 other SoBe brand beverages to its roster of soft drinks led by Pepsi and Mountain Dew, in a bid to capture more of the fast-growing market for alternatives to fizzy sodas. The owner of the nation’s second largest soft drink company said Monday it has agreed to buy South Beach Beverage Co., which sells noncarbonated fruit and dairy drinks and teas laced with gingko, bee pollen and other herbs or nutrients.

Third-quarter results at Verizon Communications Inc. met Wall Street expectations, helped by strong demand for wireless and DSL services. For the three months ended Sept. 30, Verizon recorded net income $3.47 billion, or $1.27 per share, compared with $2.54 billion, or 91 cents per share, in the year-ago period, Verizon said Monday.

Union Carbide Corp. reported a sharp decline in third-quarter earnings Monday, citing higher costs for energy and raw materials.
