Bulldogs Win With Right Hook

High school football

One point separated the defending Border League champion and runner-up Friday.

One big, late fourth-quarter play by an already proven state champion provided the difference in a season opener pitting North Idaho’s A-1 Division II heavyweights.

Sandpoint junior Tony Hook, a state wrestling champion at 145 pounds last year, scampered 76 yards on a fumble return as the Bulldogs rallied for a 20-19 victroy over the visiting Lake City Timberwolves.

After the Timberwolves stopped Sandpoint on downs 3 yards short of the end zone with 6:59 remaining, it appeared LC was just one sustained drive away from winning a wildly entertaining game before a crowd of about 2,500 at LC.

On the 11th play of the ensuing possession, LC needed 1 yard to convert a first down at the Sandpoint 24-yard line. T-Wolves running back Brandon Mills was seemingly inches from giving his team a fresh set of downs when Sandpoint safety Matt Reifsnyder stripped the ball from Mills.

The ball bounded into Hook’s hands and nobody was going to catch the speedy Bulldog. Shane Frank’s point after put Sandpoint ahead by the final margin with 2:44 remaining.
