Stocks Up Slightly

Stocks closed higher Friday in lackluster trading ahead of the holiday weekend. Investors’ recent optimism was only slightly dampened by conflicting economic data.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 23.68 at 11,238.78, after gaining 112 points on Thursday. Friday’s gain helped the blue chip index rise 46.15 for the week.

The Nasdaq composite index, which also rose more than 100 points Thursday, was up 27.98 at 4,234.33. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up 3.09 at 1,520.77. The Nasdaq jumped 191.65 for the week, while the S&P 500 rose 14.32.
