USC win no big deal
Before Carter Strickland trumpets the return of the Pac-10 to national prominence following the University of Southern California’s pasting of the Penn State Nittany Lions (“Trojans set the tone”, Aug. 31), he might wish to reconsider.
I have been an ardent fan of Penn State for well over 30 years and though it pains me to say this, the team USC thumped in the 2000 Kickoff Classic is not even considered an upper echelon Big Ten team this year. In fact, most pundits pick this year’s edition of the Nittany Lions to be, at best a sixth-place finisher in this year’s race to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl.
Certainly the Pac-10 is in dire need of a victory over any nationally prominent team. And certainly the Pac-10 will have additional opportunities to do so as the season progresses. For now, however, let’s not trumpet the return of the Pac-10 based upon one victory over an atypical Penn State team. Terry A. Hontz Spokane
Strickland not a Dawg
Carter Strickland’s anti-Husky bias showed more than usual in your list of “Top Ex-Huskies in the NFL (Aug. 26).” According to Pro Football Weekly, the top ex-Husky is All-Pro Lawyer Milloy, who they rated as the second-best safety in the league. He was not on your list. Others not on your list in PFW’s Top 20 at their position are Cam Cleeland TE (9), Olin Kreutz C (6), Benji Olson G (9), D’Marco Farr DT (17) and Tony Parrish S (10). Nine ex-Huskies were rated in the top 10 at their position and your list of 11 players only included three of them. Doing homework is always harder when you don’t like the subject.
However, I do agree with you that the Huskies are overrated this season, with a suspect defense and no deep threat on offense. Mike Helland Elk
