WSU Student Turns Self In
A 20-year-old Washington State University student turned himself in to Pullman police late Friday night after he found out he had injured a police officer.
Ryan David Ebenger of Winthrop told police he didn’t know he had hurt officer Carew Halleck in a scuffle late Thursday. Ebenger, a sophomore, told police he heard media reports that the officer had been injured, and after talking with his parents, decided to surrender.
At around midnight Thursday, Halleck approached a man drinking alcohol in the 400 block of Oak. When he asked the man to sit down, the man refused and a struggle ensued. Halleck hit his head on the concrete, suffered a mild concussion and received stitches in his head and chin.
Pullman police say Ebenger will face gross misdemeanor charges of obstructing a law enforcement officer and minor in possession of alcohol. At this point, police said there is insufficient evidence that Ebenger intended to assault the officer.
