In Case You’Ve Been Avoiding It, Broadway/University Corner Open
Motorists have one new route around Valley construction this week.
The concrete intersection at Broadway Avenue and University Road opened last week, leaving Broadway construction-free.
Road work had closed the intersection to motorists since July.
Construction continues on the rest of University between Main and Mission avenues. The work is part of a widening project scheduled to finish in October.
Broadway is also open slightly further east, where widening work continues on Evergreen Road between Mission and Sprague Avenue.
The intersection was finished earlier this summer and was never closed completely.
Evergreen will hook up with a new Interstate 90 interchange being built by the state Department of Transportation.
The DOT is building a Mission Avenue bridge, which will go over Evergreen Road. Evergreen will slope down to Interstate 90, then pass over the interstate via a bridge and continue north to connect with Indiana Avenue and the Spokane Valley Mall.
The DOT plans to finish the Evergreen interchange in November or December, according to DOT spokesman Al Gilson.
Other construction work continued around the Valley this week:
Eastbound I-90 will be down to one lane this weekend between the Broadway and Argonne interchanges. Work began Friday night on the eastbound side and could continue through Sunday if the weather remains dry, according to the DOT.
Evergreen interchange work will close one eastbound lane of I-90 each night next week starting at 7 p.m. The closed traffic lane should reopen by 6 a.m. the following day.
Also, paving work on Evergreen Road bridge could require daytime lane restrictions on I-90 on Thursday and Friday.
Work on the Spokane Valley Couplet will make for rough driving on short stretches of First Avenue, Lewis Road and Park Road. Thierman Road will be closed to through traffic from Sprague Avenue to Second Avenue.
