Ex-Cougar Qbs Now On Lithographs
Three former Washington State University quarterback stars Drew Bledsoe, Ryan Leaf and Mark Rypien - are featured on a full-color, limited edition lithograph being sold to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
The original painting was created by sports and corporate commemorative artist Roger Whitney of Phoenix.
The 23-inch-by-29-inch unframed prints are priced at $150 each. They are numbered and signed by the three quarterbacks and the artist. They may be ordered by telephoning the Spokane office of the Children’s Miracle Network at (509) 474-4955.
Proceeds will directly benefit 10 CMN-affiliated hospitals and facilities throughout the Inland Northwest.
Baseball
Alumni of University High School have scheduled their fourth annual game for Saturday on the U-Hi diamond.
Participants will be able to see plans for U-Hi’s new school and baseball stadium. Construction is scheduled to begin Oct. 1.

Basketball
Eastern Washington University placed fourth among NCAA Division I schools in the Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The awards, recognizing the nation’s highest NCAA Division I team grade-point averages, were based on nominations submitted by WBCA member coaches.
The Eagles, coached by Jocelyn Pfeifer, posted a cumulative 3.339 team grade-point average for the 1999-2000 school year.
EWU was one of two Big Sky Conference teams honored. Weber State placed eleventh.
Biking
Charlie Shonkwiler, a University of Washington senior, took first place Aug. 26-27 in the collegiate category of the Schweitzer Dirt and Rock Tour, the final race of this year’s Washington-Idaho-Montana series.
Shonkwiler finished fifth overall in the cash category, which includes professionals, semipros and all-comers.
He and his UW teammates will be the host team for the Collegiate National Mountain Bike Finals, also at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Oct. 13-15.
Lawn bowling
The team of Lowell Brooks, skip; Betty Brooks, vice-skip, and Dean Ferraby, lead, finished first Sept. 4 as the two-day Northwest Division Open Mixed Triples competition concluded in Spokane’s Mission Park.
The team of Bob Miller, Marjorie Ahrens and John Marchi placed second. Dave Robb, Olivia Kissin and Rich Gaffey finished third.
The tournament, hosted by Spokane Lawn Bowling Club, included teams from Spokane, Portland and Seattle.
Soccer
Gonzaga Prep graduate Ryan Wittstruck, 1999 Northwest Conference Player of the Year, is off to another good start at the University of Puget Sound.
Wittstruck recorded seven saves Sept. 1 as the sixth-ranked Loggers played a 1-1 overtime tie with Chapman University. He was touched with only goal again the next day when U.S. International edged UPS 1-0.
Wrestling
They may not have to change the nameplate on the assistant wrestling coach’s office door at North Idaho College.
Dusty Roberts, previously assisted at Gonzaga Prep, will replace his older brother, Kevin, as NIC’s assistant, head coach Pat Whitcomb said. Kevin Roberts left for an assistant coaching position at the University of Wyoming.
Another Roberts brother, Andy, who completed his wrestling eligibility last year at NIC, will stay on as a volunteer assistant while completing his two-year degree.
