UI Enrollment Grows 3 Percent; Cda’S Rise Sharp Freshmen Straight From High School Set Record
Student enrollment at the University of Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Center grew 11.7 percent this fall.
On Tuesday, 362 students were enrolled at the satellite campus, compared to 324 students last year.
Coeur d’Alene Dean Jack Dawson said an increase in full-time faculty and an improvement in the university’s image have helped increase enrollment.
“We deliver a quality product,” Dawson said. Total student enrollment for all the university’s campuses grew 3 percent this year for a total of 11,634 students.
The number of freshmen attending directly out of high school broke a record with 1,618 students, which is a 7 percent increase from the 1999 academic year.
These numbers reflect enrollment during the first 10 days of classes.
“This growth is welcome and exciting,” said President Bob Hoover. “It is the result of some very hard work on the part of our faculty and staff, who have made a concerted effort to grow our enrollment.”
The majority of students, or 10,273, are on the Moscow campus. Enrollment is also growing at the Idaho Falls and Boise centers.
The university saw a 15.6 percent increase in the number of international students for a total of 459. Also, more students are coming from out-of-state, for a 3.7 percent increase.
Boise State remained the state’s largest university, with a record enrollment of 16,459. Idaho State University has enrollment of 13,045.
Boise State said its growth was within the 2 percent figure used for strategic planning, and President Charles Ruch said it buttressed his continuing focus on expanded facilities.
“Our growth reinforces the need for our first building at the Boise State West campus in Canyon County and for additional buildings on the Boise campus,” he said. “We must anticipate and plan for steady growth well into the future.”
