The second annual Antique and Arts Festival at Ritzville will be Sept. 23 and 24. Booths will line the historic downtown corridor near the train depot. The Depot museum and the Burroughs Victorian home will both be open for visitors. For information call (509) 659-1930.

Curlew Lake
Madilane Perry is urging her lakeside neighbors to upgrade their septic systems. Curlew Lake has long been plagued by phosphates, which cause an abundance of aquatic plant life and weeds. Perry, with the help of the County Conservation District, was able to get a grant to help her install a very expensive filter septic system to service her home and a neighboring cabin. She urges all to look into this option to do their part to save the lake.

Now folks know exactly where their new pool will be. The Let’s Build Ephrata’s Pool group has erected a sign to show where the facility will be built. Donations of $300,000 from private parties have been received, and the city has just been notified it ranks second on the state’s list for an Interagency for Outdoor Recreation grant.

Spokane County Fire District 5 is fighting to keep its relationship with Lincoln County Fire District 4 after Lincoln County commissioners voted to sever the joint operations agreement, saying Spokane County’s tax contributions don’t keep pace with the growth rate. District 5 commissioner Tom Cresswell is campaigning to save a relationship he feels helps both districts not only financially, but with general safety.

The local youth center is $1,000 closer to purchasing the building it occupies after donations and sales from a recent yard sale were totaled The former Assembly of God Church building will cost the youth group $125,000.
Spokane County
Spokane
On Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be detour signs on Highway 278 in Rockford from Maple Street to B Street because of the Southeast Spokane County Fair parade. The signs will direct traffic through Rockford to Worley, Idaho, and north through Rockford to Spokane. Southbound 18-wheeler trucks and towed trailers, boats, etc., are encouraged to exit off Highway 27 at Elder Road to Highway 95 in Idaho. Those traveling northbound should stay on Highway 95 to Interstate 90.

Mayor Bob Anderson is recovering from heart surgery. Anderson was admitted to the hospital last month with heart attack symptoms.

Eagle Scout Michael Cammack is collecting education materials to send to children in developing countries. He’s looking for school supplies such as erasers, pencils, notebook paper, chalk and blunt-nosed scissors. The packages will be sent to organizations including the Red Cross and Catholic Charities.

Michael Roberts, Corey Miller and Brooks Carver, the team known as The Limit Breakerz, won the 3-on-3 basketball tournament held recently in St. Maries. The team also won the Wallace 3-on-3 tournament and will travel to Cheney Oct. 6-8 for the Eastern Washington University 3-on-3 tournament.

An evaluation of the 2000 Bonner County Fair will be conducted by 4-H leaders and parents at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Extension office, 4205 N. Boyer, at the fairgrounds. The community is welcome.

Naples Elementary School students started the year with a new playground and playground equipment thanks to seven years of fund-raising efforts by the Naples Parent/Teacher/Student Association. About $8,000 was raised by the organization. Community businesses donated materials for the playground also.
Kootenai County
Spirit Lake
The Open Bible Church will open a thrift shop Tuesday at the Spirit Lake Community Senior Center, behind the library. Hours for the Nu-2-U shop will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays to start with. Proceeds will benefit the church.

The Sower Bible Bookstore, owned by Hal Green recently opened at 114 McKinley Ave. The business offers Christian books, Bibles, music, videos, gifts, Sunday school and church supplies. The grand opening is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday.

Libby
A dozen people from the Libby Christian Church spent part of June in Honduras witnessing and helping rebuild homes after Hurricane Mitch. In June and July they stayed in Teguciagalpa and delivered medical supples and worked with the local Mision Caribe. Twenty people from a Sandpoint Church joined the Libby team.
