New U-Hi Breaks Ground On Monday

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new University High School will take place at 5 p.m. Monday.

The U-Hi band and cheerleaders will provide a festive atmosphere for the event, which will take place at the southwest corner of the new site.

The $30 million construction project at 32nd Avenue and Pines Road is due to be complete by September 2002. Lydig Construction is the general contractor.

Central Valley School Board members and other school district leaders will attend. Also invited are all U-Hi students and parents.

After the ceremony, back at U-Hi, a spaghetti feed in the cafeteria will open the Back to School night. The spaghetti dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $3 per person, $5 per couple or $10 per family. Students and parents should gather at 6:40 in the U-Hi gym for a welcome and to hear general back to school information. Starting at 7 p.m., parents will follow student schedules to visit with their child’s teachers.

On Monday morning, students from Horizon Junior High School and fifth- and sixth-graders from Chester Elementary School will attend a pre-groundbreaking event at the site.

U-Hi Principal Erik Ohlund will show the students where the new school will be placed on the site, and talk about features of the new school.

He also will emphasize safety around the construction site.
