Ucla Sweeps Cougars
Kristee Porter, Elizabeth Bachman and Lauren Fendrick combined for 39 kills to lead seventh-ranked UCLA to a 15-8, 15-5, 15-8 sweep over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference women’s volleyball Friday night in Los Angeles.
Bachman also had six blocks for UCLA (7-3, 2-0).
Adrian Hankoff, Holly Harris and Zanda Bautre each had seven kills to pace WSU (8-2, 0-2).
April Ross and Jennifer Pahl each had nine kills to spark sixth-ranked Southern Cal to a 15-7, 15-5, 15-5 Pac-10 win over visiting Washington.
The Trojans (7-0, 2-0) finished with nine service aces.
Emily Seacat had 12 kills and Paige Benjamin added 11 kills to pace the Huskies (4-4, 0-2).
Kristen Turner had 13 kills and four blocks to lead Whitworth to a 15-3, 15-3, 15-10 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Lewis & Clark College (0-5, 0-1).
Nicole Weedman totaled 30 assists for Whitworth (6-4, 1-0).
Montana and Cal Poly SLO each posted first-day victories at the Spikeoff Spokane tournament at Gonzaga.
Montana rolled to a 15-11, 15-11, 15-9 win over Gonzaga in the first game and Cal Poly pounded Texas-Pan American 15-1, 15-4, 15-0 in the second match.
The Zags got 12 kills and 12 digs from Heather Osberg.
Community Colleges of Spokane, Columbia Basin, Big Bend and Blue Mountain each went 2-0 during the first day of the Inland Northwest Communications Tournament at Spokane Falls CC.
CCS beat Tacoma 15-1, 15-7, 15-4 and Whatcom 15-12, 15-5, 15-2. Melissa French tallied 25 kills in the two matches for the Sasquatch.
Men’s soccer
Brent Whitfield scored 22 minutes into overtime to lift seventh-ranked Cal State Fullerton (5-0) to a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga (2-3) in the opening round of the Fila Classic on the campus of Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.
A pair of Duncan Oughton goals staked the Titans (5-0) to a 2-0 lead.
Scott Bertram, with assists from Brian Ching and Jason Kuska, scored 1:41 before the break to pull Gonzaga (2-3) within 2-1.
Scott Yuska tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 62:56 mark and Ching added an unassisted goal 3:59 later to put the Zags up 3-2.
Fullerton’s Hector Orellana sent the game into overtime at 70:02.
Matt Stueckle scored a first-half goal and Whitworth (3-1) made it stand up en route to a 1-0 non-conference win over Warner Pacific (0-3) at Whitworth Field.
Stueckle, a Lewis and Clark High School grad, headed the ball into the net off a Jon Guenther corner kick at the 9:40 mark.
Dustin Allvery tallied two goals and an assist to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 5-0 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges road victory at Everett.
Robert Crumb, Eric Johnson and Alexander Caten also scored for CCS (4-3-1, 1-0).
Women’s soccer
Gonzaga jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Idaho State ripped off three unanswered goals in the second half to eke out a 3-2 non-conference victory in Pocatello.
Kellie Leaf found the net at 9:34 and 37:30 to give Gonzaga (2-4) the early lead.
Tarragh Law put the Bengals (6-1-1) on the scoreboard for the first time 14:33 into the second half. Jill Schade’s goal at 64:13 made it 2-2 and Chrissy Nelson’s rebound score with 55 seconds left lifted Idaho State to its 10th straight win at home.
Cal Poly SLO scored the game’s only goal 8 minutes into overtime to turn back the Washington State Cougars (3-2) 1-0 in non-conference action in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Amanda Chase and Carly Jen kins scored first-half goals and keeper Jessica Froelich made them stand up in a 2-0 NWAACC victory for CC Spokane (3-3-1, 1-0) in Everett.
Men’s basketball
Keith Browne, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward from Tacoma Community College, and Marc Axton, a 6-7, 218-pound guard from State 4A prep champion Foss High School in Tacoma, have made oral commitments to play at Eastern Washington University next season.
Browne averaged 16.1 points and 6.2 rebounds as a freshman last winter. Axton, who spent much of his time at the point last season, averaged 11.0 points per game for a Foss team that finished 26-4 on its way to the state championship.
