Cal Poly Caps Spikeoff With Sweep Over Gu

Tournament most valuable player Melanie Hathaway totaled 15 kills and 12 digs to cap Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s perfect record at the ninth annual Spikeoff Spokane with a 3-0 sweep of host Gonzaga on Saturday night.

Worthy Lien added 11 kills and Carly O’Halloran 36 assists for the Mustangs (6-3). O’Halloran and Molly Duncan also made the all-tournament team for Cal Poly.

Freshman Mary Finnerty led the Zags (4-6) with 11 kills and a .563 hitting percentage. Heather Osberg, an all-tournament selection, added eight kills and three blocks. GU’s Britt Whiting also made the all-tourney squad.

Montana (2-1) took second place by defeating Texas-Pan American 3-1 in its final match. Erin Adams and Kodi Taylor earned all-tourney honors for the Grizzlies.

GU, 1-2 at the tourney, opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Texas-Pan American. Abby Cullen had 18 kills, and Finnerty added 14 digs and 11 kills for the Zags.

Jennifer Gabel had 10 kills while hitting .400 and added six blocks to help Eastern Washington (2-5, 1-1) to a 3-0 sweep of a Big Sky Conference match at Portland State (0-10, 0-2).

Janelle Ruen and Jamie Carmichael combined for 16 digs for the Eagles, who snapped a five-match losing streak. Katie Young and Stacy Ball combined for 21 kills for the Vikings.

Kristen Turner had nine kills, hit .500 and added four blocks to guide Whitworth (7-4, 2-0) to a 3-0 win over visiting Pacific in the Northwest Conference.

Lindsey Wagstaff had three aces and combined with Grethen Smith for 15 Pirates digs. Erin Brady led the Boxers (1-3, 0-2) with eight kills and 10 digs.

Led by tournament most valuable player Allison Holsten, Columbia Basin College won the Inland Northwest Communications Tournament by defeating host Community Colleges of Spokane 15-2, 15-10, 17-15 in the title match.

Melissa Mackay also made the all-star team for the Hawks, who finished 5-0 at the two-day tourney at SCC and SFCC.

CCS (9-7) finished with a 4-1 record, placing Ferris High grads Beth Vercic and Jolene Bogle on the all-tournament team.

Women’s soccer

Jessica Fransen had two assists and Jamie Erickson scored in overtime to lift Eastern Washington (2-5) to a 2-1 win over Oklahoma State at El Paso, Texas.

EWU’s Keri Nichols broke a scoreless tie at 49:49. Kellie Williams of the Cowboys (3-5) forced overtime with a goal at 87 minutes.

Amanda Chase scored twice, the first off a penalty kick, and CCS (3-4-1, 2-0 NAACC) defeated Skagit Valley 3-0 at Mt. Vernon.

Men’s soccer

Brian Hein’s first-half goal from 40 yards out stood up during Whitworth’s 1-0 win over visiting Northwest College in a non-conference match. The Pirates are 4-1-1.

Robert Crump had one goal and one assist in the first half, starting CCS (4-2-1, 2-0 NWAACC) toward a 5-1 win over Skagit Valley at Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Michael Goehring’s goal on a free kick from 35 yards started visiting Santa Clara (4-1) toward a 2-0 non-conference win over Washington (3-3) that snapped the Huskies’ three-game winning streak.

Cross country

Third-place Holly Weiler led four Whitworth runners in the top eight, and the Pirates women won the five-team Whitman Invitational at Fort Walla Walla Park.

Weiler completed the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 19.08 seconds, 9 seconds behind champion Jennie Wood of the host Missionaries. Julia Lucas (19:21.04), Beth Abbey (19:45.58) and Leslie Nelson (19:56.32) were other Pirates in the top eight.

Lewis & Clark picked off spots 1-4 to cruise in the men’s race. Chris Mayer topped the field with a 25:41.70 for 8,000 meters. Josh Sherven (27:02.14), in 11th place, led Whitworth’s showing.
