How they scored

First quarter

Washington State 7, Utah 0: Josh Shavies 29-yard pass from Jason Gesser. Nick Lambert kick. Eleven plays, 80 yards, 5:07. The Cougars overcame two third-and-longs to take the ball into Utah territory. Then on a fourth-and-2 at the Utah 29, WSU elected to go for it. Gesser faked the handoff and found Shavies open at the 10-yard line. Shavies stepped out of Andre Dyson’s tackle and rumbled in for the score.

Washington State 14, Utah 0: Curtis Nettles 26-yard pass from Gesser. Lambert kick. Eleven plays, 80 yards, 5:55. Using a solid ground game and controlled passing, the Cougars marched right down the field. Nettles came up big with an 18-yard reception early in the drive to get the Cougars to midfield. On the touchdown, Nettles beat Dyson on a high pass thrown to the left side of the end zone.

Washington State 21, Utah 0: Milton Wynn 29-yard pass from Gesser. Lambert kick. Three plays, 40 yards, 1:11. Chris Martin stripped the ball from Ute running back Nick Moragan, and safety Billy Newman recovered it, giving the Cougars excellent field position. After two David Minnich runs, Gesser scrambled and then found Wynn streaking across the back of the end zone.

Second quarter

Washington State 21, Utah 7: Cliff Russell 47-yard pass from Darnell Arceneauz. Golden Whetman kick. One play, 47 yards, :04. Cougars punter Alan Cox only managed a 21-yard kick, giving the Utes the ball at the WSU 47-yard line. From there Arceneaux found Russell for the score.

Washington State 28, Utah 7: Wynn 57-yard pass from Gesser. Lambert kick. Five plays, 80 yards, 2:29. After four straight plays up the gut, Gesser went up top and found Wynn streaking down the sidelines. Wynn hauled the ball in over cornerback Jeff Ray at the 15 and coasted in for the score.

Third quarter

Washington State 28, Utah 14: Russell 24-yard pass from Arceneaux. Whetman kick. Ten plays, 68 yards. 4:56. The Utes took the opening kickoff of the second half and went right down the field. On a third-and-7, Arceneaux found Russell at the 6. Erik Coleman, the defender, was a step behind and that allowed Russell to make the catch and get into the end zone.

Washington State 28, Utah 21: Andre Dyson 30-yard fumble return. Whetman kick. One play, 30 yards. On the first play after Utah’s score, Minnich went to the right side. Utah’s Arnold Parker met him there and forced a fumble. Dyson picked the ball up and had a clear shot to the end zone.

Fourth quarter

Washington State 31, Utah 21: Lambert 32-yard field goal. Thirteen plays, 62 yards, 6:31. The Cougars got a much-needed long drive to take away some of the Utah momentum. Gesser came through with two long third-down conversions, one on a run, one a pass to keep the drive alive. The drive stalled when on a third-and-3, the Cougars tried a backward pass that was dropped and had to be covered.

Washington State 38, Utah 21: Minnich 36-yard run. Lambert kick. One play, 36 yards, :08. Washington State got te ball back late after Utah failed to convert on a fourth down. Minnich went right up the gut and in for the score.
