Othello

Voters today will decide whether to create a library taxing district to replace what has been an annual contribution from the county.

Ferry County

Curlew

The community is invited to the annual Curlew School open house at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Pizza will be available at 5:30. The event gives people a look at the facilities and samples of student work and time to talk with teachers and other staff. Parents can follow their child’s daily schedule with 10-minute classes.

Grant County

Moses Lake

Port of Moses Lake officials recently dedicated the area’s new $3.8million waste water system. The port district teamed with the city and county on the system. All three will benefit as the system should mean industrial expansion of the port.

Lincoln County

Davenport

Jess Perdue’s restaurant, Ellie’s, is at the west end of town and was advertised to travelers at the east end by a small sign on city property. The city took that sign down. Perdue is threatening a lawsuit. The city says it notified Perdue months ago that the sign would need to come down.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Undersheriff Mike Cress says money is causing a shortage of jail personnel. The shortage has caused full-time staff to work overtime shifts, which, Cress says, makes for unsafe working conditions. The county tries to have two people on at all times for safety, but the six full-time and two part-time employees cannot cover all shifts.

Spokane

The summer food program offered at several city parks and some Spokane schools served 150,000 meals to children during seven weeks of the summer.

Stevens County

Colville

The city needed a right of way to complete the Wynne Street and Highway 395 intersection project. After negotiations with NAPA Auto Parts fell through, Safeway offered a three-sided right of way to the city. The state still needs to approve it.

Whitman County

Pullman

The Bill Chimpaman Palouse Trail has four more miles of pavement, bringing the length of the path between Moscow and Pullman to 12 miles. The community celebrated a trail dedication Sept. 13 at the Koppel Farm in Pullman. Folks enjoyed a two-mile “poker walk” along the trail. They collected cards and at the end, the high hands won prizes.

St. Maries

Kootenai Electric customers wanting to report a power outage need to use the new number: (877) 744-1055. Customers will reach an automated system, which also will provide updates during outages. For other business, call (208) 765-1200.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

The Bonner County Association of Realtors Grant Program gave a check for $2,500 to the county Homeless Task Force. The money was raised through the association’s annual Christmas party/auction and the Charity Golf Tournament.

Boundary County

Eastport

The Good Grief Tavern raised $1,100 for the Mt. Hall Fire Department. The fund-raiser was Sept. 3 and included a $310 donation from the Kelly Hughes Band.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library foundation is hoping to have at least 100 baskets donated for their annual fund-raiser at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. A Tisket, A Tasket, A Literary Basket started in 1997, features one live auction and three silent ones, raffles, music, hors d’oeuvres and more. The event has raised $3,000 for the library building fund. Donated baskets need a theme related to a book. Tickets ($25) are at the library.

Latah County

Juliaetta

Vashon, Wash., songwriter and family entertainer Linda Severt will lead workshops during the weeklong “Clown Camp” at Juliaetta Elementary School. Juggling, acrobatics, music and clowning will be taught. Junior and senior high students and community members may take juggling the same week. Dawna Stice was named Shoshone Medical Center’s Employee of the Month. Stice has worked as a receptionist at the front desk since October 1999. She lives in Page with husband Ed, collects dolls and likes to fish and camp.

The Environmental Protection Agency will host a free conference Sept. 21-23 to provide information for homeowners on asbestos issues, including clean-up activities in Libby and asbestos-related diseases. The event will be in the VFW Building in Libby. To register, call (406) 293-6194.
