Firefighters from around the region will be at the Spokane Valley Mall on Saturday for a “combat challenge” competition benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Spokane Valley Fire District is organizing the event in the mall parking lot.

Competitors will carry fire hoses up a three-story tower, put out a car fire and drag a victim out of danger, among other activities. The events are timed and the team with the fastest overall time wins a traveling trophy.

Firefighters from Boise have won the last two titles and will be back to defend their championship.

Valley firefighter Karl Cantrell said he expects 11 teams to compete. Most are from the Spokane area but some are coming from as far away as Helena, King County and Hayden Lake, Idaho.

There will also be a free “kid’s combat challenge” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children will also get a chance to tour a fire truck and get picutres taken with firefighters.

The competition will take place in the parking lot in front of Pier 1 Imports at the Valley Mall from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
