Mead Remodel 60 Percent Completed

While Mead High School’s $31 million remodel project buzzes toward completion, this year students and staff are able to enjoy portions of the new work.

Already, several classrooms, the band and choir room, the library and several administrative offices are complete.

Still to come are some carpeting, tiling, painting and lights, coaches’ offices and locker rooms in November or December, a wrestling room in mid-October and a theater in mid-December or early January. Outside, landscaping and an entirely redone parking lot are scheduled to be completed next August.

“We’re about 60 percent complete,” said Principal Mick Miller, noting that all the interior remodeling should be done by April. “It’s really neat to see it all come together.”

Though Miller said it’s hard for some of the older students to watch their school transform so completely, the majority of comments he’s heard have been positive. The school’s particularly identifying features - the mall and the pit where students gather to socialize hold dances and watch movies - have been retained.

Miller probably spoke for many when he said he’s most excited about the construction being completed.

“I just want to concentrate on being a principal,” Miller said, “instead of a construction supervisor and a building developer.”
