New Areas Allocated For Disabled
Four new areas have been designated especially for disabled hunters on the Colville National Forest beginning this fall.
Roads that have been closed to vehicles for budget or conservation reasons will be opened to qualified disabled hunters during the deer or elk seasons, said Perry Byrd, the agency’s disabled hunting program coordinator.
The four roads are:
Renner Lake Road 9500705 on the Kettle Falls Ranger District.
Middle Fork Calispell Road 353001 on the Newport Ranger District.
Boundary Mountain Road 6120900 on the Republic Ranger District.
Snyder Hill Road 3300050 on the Sullivan Lake Ranger District will be open during general elk season.
In addition, the Aladdin Mountain unit on the Colville Ranger District, a disabled hunting area for five years, will remain open for deer and elk hunting.
“With the opening of these new areas, we are pleased to offer the disabled public a quality hunting experience in areas previously available only to walk-in hunters, Byrd said.
Red and white signs will be posted at the entrance to each of the units. Vehicles are prohibited on the roads unless they display a Washington State Fish and Game disabled hunting placard.
Walk-in hunting still will be allowed in these areas.
Only the disabled hunter and one hunting companion can carry firearms in their vehicle while in the unit. Non-hunting family members and friends may accompany the disabled hunter, Byrd said.
Disabled hunters may not cut firewood, camp or gather any other forest products when hunting in these areas under this permit.
A quota of disabled hunters will be set for the Snyder Hill unit during elk Season. The Sullivan Lake Ranger District plants to hold a lottery to determine who will be allowed access for each day.
