Range Fires Force Rules Change For Elk Harvest

Rules for elk harvest in Washington’s Game Management Unit 372 were changed after publication of the 2000 regulations pamphlet because of August range fires in Benton County.

The bag limit for elk in Unit 372 from Oct. 1-13 is changed from antlerless only to any elk.

Because of recent wild fires, elk are searching for alternative food sources, according to a Washington Fish and Wildlife Department press release. The department has been trying to reduce the numbers of elk in this area to prevent crop damage and sees this as an opportunity to let hunters kill more of the elk.

Most of this area is privately owned. Access is limited. Landowner permission is required prior to entry. Archers and muzzleloaders must wear hunter orange during this hunt.
