Schanz, Briggs Pace North Idaho
Forward Casey Schanz and midfielder Scott Briggs scored first-period goals from midfield to give North Idaho College a 2-1 men’s soccer win over visiting Columbia Basin on Wednesday.
Schanz and Briggs are both from Idaho Falls.
NIC (4-0-1 overall, 4-0 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) held the Hawks (2-2-1, 1-2-1) scoreless for 70 minutes.
Also in the NWAACC, Community Colleges of Spokane (5-2-1, 3-0) defeated Walla Walla 5-0 at Spokane Falls CC.
Substitute Brendan Siefken assisted on a goal and scored another during a span of 19 seconds in the second half, and Whitworth (5-1-1, 1-0) defeated visiting Whitman 3-0 in a Northwest Conference opener.
The Luptons shared the spotlight. Senior Mark scored into the top right corner just before halftime and junior Doug earned the shutout in goal.
Whitworth won its fourth consecutive match, all by shutout. The Pirates haven’t allowed a goal in 415 minutes of play.
The Missionaries are 3-4, 0-1.
Women’s soccer
Sherry Albano’s first shot glanced off a defender for a goal at 8 minutes, and visiting Columbia Basin (3-1, 2-1) went on to a 2-0 win over NIC in the NWAACC.
The Cardinals (3-1-1, 2-1) were limited to 10 shots on goal.
Also in the NWAACC, Walla Walla defeated CCS 1-0 at SFCC. The Sasquatch dropped to 3-5-1, 2-1.
Dalyce Young fed three corner kicks to Carly Sullivan for headed-in goals, and Whitworth (3-1-1, 1-0) defeated visiting Whitman 7-0 in a Northwest Conference opener.
Young, the conference leader with eight assists, also scored a goal off a corner kick. Sullivan’s hat trick gave her five goals for the season.
The Pirates won their third consecutive match. Whitman is 0-3, 0-1.
Volleyball
Joelene Bogle and Beth Vercic combined for 18 kills and 31 digs to guide CCS to a 15-12, 15-7, 15-13 win over visiting Yakima Valley in the NWAACC.
Tovah Trimming and Allison Tingey added eight kills apiece for the Sasquatch (10-7, 1-1). Kylee Sixkiller had nine kills and 10 digs for the Yaks (0-2 NWAACC).
