Schools Look At Hiv/Aids Curriculum
CORRECTION: 9-23-00; V7 The HIV/AIDS preview session being held at East Valley Middle School on Thursday is for parents of eighth-graders only. Sessions for sixth- and seventh-grade parents will be held later.
Parents previews of HIV and AIDS curriculum are planned next week at Freeman schools and at East Valley Middle School.
Every year, schools must hold a preview session on their HIV and AIDS curriculum. By state law, parents who do not want their children exposed to that instruction must attend the session before they can have their children excused.
The state requires HIV and AIDS education for students in grades five through 12.
Freeman School District is holding its parent session at 7 p.m. Monday in the library of the Freeman Junior High School. Parents will be able to view any of the films that will be shown to students.
East Valley Middle School has scheduled its preview session at 6 p.m. next Thursday in the school library.
Other East Valley schools and West Valley schools have not yet set their dates, but Central Valley parents can mark these dates for their sessions:
Junior high and high school curriculum will be previewed on Oct. 17 and 19, at North Pines and Evergreen junior high schools, respectively.
CV elementary parents have their choice of Oct. 24 at Progress Elementary or Oct. 26 at University Elementary, respectively.
This will be the only set of parent previews scheduled by Central Valley schools, although most of the CV elementary schools will not run their AIDS curriculum until the spring.
