Scope Celebrates With Annual Walk

On Saturday, hundreds of Edgecliff residents and community leaders will sing songs and listen to speeches as they march through their neighborhood.

The third annual Walk for Success organized by Edgecliff SCOPE will feature talks by community activists, law enforcement officers, county officials, religious leaders and school personnel talking about the past year and the future. SCOPE stands for Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort.

The march starts at 10 a.m. at Edgecliff Park, located at Eighth Avenue and Park Road.

The march was originally organized to make a statement that the neighborhood will not tolerate drugs and violence. This year, it will showcase recent changes.

The march will stop at Pratt Elementary School, the Edgecliff SCOPE station and Woodlawn Cemetery.

Speakers on Saturday include Sheriff Mark Sterk and County Commissioner Kate McCaslin. Deanna Walters of the county’s code enforcement office will talk about efforts to clean up messy yards and junk vehicles.

Fairmount Memorial Association manager Duane Broyles will discuss his vision for the neighborhood’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery, which Fairmount recently acquired from the county. Community activist Wendie Kiourkas, who fought to save Woodlawn Cememtery from neglect, will speak as well.

SCOPE Edgecliff president Jackie Ash said she is thrilled about the walk and thinks the weather will make the mood festive. “It’s supposed to be 70s and sunshine which absolutely thrills me,” she said.

After the march, there will be food and games for children at the Edgecliff park.
