Adams County Othello
The City Council is reluctant to allow a second septic company to drain sewage into the city sewer system. The council tabled the proposal by B.S. Pumpers at its last meeting due to liability issues. B.S. Pumpers told the city it is awaiting government approval to build its own lagoons.
Ferry County Republic
Volunteers were key to the Ferry County Fair being a success. More than 50 stepped forward after hearing the fair was short of help to staff the exhibit hall.
Grant County Ephrata
The city recently dedicated its Water Reclamation Facility, which will make wastewater safe enough for most uses other than drinking or bathing. Rates will jump from $8.50 to $29 per month for five years to pay for the facility.
Lincoln County Harrington
The topper for this weekend’s Fall Festival was to have been a dance in the middle of Hemlock Street to celebrate the completion of the paving project. But the project is not finished, so the dance is off.
Pend Oreille County Newport
All four area school districts have seen a decline in student numbers. Newport is 34 students lighter than last year, translating into less money from the state. The Selkirk schools registered 17 fewer kids than expected and Cusick is down 21. West Bonner has 36 fewer students than budgeted for.
Spokane County Spokane
The Spokane Parks 2000 program marked its 75th year of serving the city’s children this summer. Two parks were eliminated from the program, resulting in a 9 percent drop in attendance. Parks officials are talking about expanding summer recreation next year by creating day camps with participation fees.
Stevens County Colville
The Colville Community Arts Association’s 2000-2001 concert schedule will begin with the Rhythm Brothers swinging jazz group. In March, violinist Linda Wang will perform, followed by the Foothills Brass band from Calgary, Alberta. Call (509) 684-8388.
Whitman County Colfax
Thanks to recent rains, the county Parks Department has reopened Kamiak Butte Country Park. The camping and hiking area just south of Palouse had been closed since early August because of fire danger. Open fires are still restricted. Call (509) 397-6238.

Benewah County St. Maries
Spence Nitcy of St. Maries won a logging truck loaded with firewood that was raffled by Hospice of Benewah County on Sept. 4 during Paul Bunyan Days.
Bonner County Sagle
Daryl Baird of Sagle recently wrote a book on creating pottery and presented a copy to the Sandpoint Library. The book has ideas and photos of pottery made by U.S., Canadian and European artists.
Boundary County Naples
Karen and John Samter’s daughters, Rosie and Naomi, performed solos for the recently released CD, “Passporte.” The CD is a collection of traditional and contemporary international folk music and can be purchased from the Samters or at Bonners Books.
Kootenai County Post Falls
There will be plenty for children to do at the Fire Department’s open house, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 30. Along with Smokey Bear, Sparky, the Crash Dummies and 911 Red E. Fox, there will be face painting, virtual golf, football tossing and a bike rodeo. It’s at 404 N. Idaho St.
Latah County Moscow
Old-fashioned arts and crafts such as flint knapping, lace making and blacksmithing will be demonstrated at the free Arts and Crafts Fair, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Phillips Farm.

Gary Bailey of Silverton won $500 in the Elks Roundup drawing Saturday.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
The school board voted recently not to appeal the order to switch the high school girls volleyball and basketball seasons. The Montana Human Rights Commission decided that Montana’s pattern discriminates against the girls by depriving them of chances for scholarships and other opportunities.
