Websites Give Hunters Status On Permits

Hunters who applied for special permits to hunt big game in Idaho and Montana could learn whether their names had been drawn by tapping into their state wildlife agency’s Internet web sites.

Hunters without access to the Internet can still get their notifications the old way - through the U.S. Postal Service.

In Montana, all hunters had to do after Aug. 17 was to use computers to log onto the department’s web site, click a few times and see if they had been successful in drawing permits.

Internet users cannot view all the names of hunters who drew permits. The sites require the user to key in a number off a personal hunting license. The search reveals only whether the holder of that license was successful in any drawings.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department has a considerable amount of information for sportsmen on its web site, including all the figures needed to calculate the odds of getting a big-game permit for a certain area. But Washington does not give personal results to drawings.
