Mt. Spokane Snaps Ferris’ 42-Match Run

Ferris had won 42 consecutive Greater Spokane League volleyball matches.

Mt. Spokane lost the first 42 matches in its GSL history.

But the past is old news to Mt. Spokane, as is Ferris’ winning streak after the Wildcats’ big five-game win at home Thursday night.

Taci Van Leuven totaled 16 kills, 25 assists and three aces as Mt. Spokane (4-2, 2-2) toppled the Saxons 13-15, 9-15, 15-5, 15-10, 15-4 in a 2-1/2-hour match.

Down 2-0 in games, Mt. Spokane broke to a 7-1 lead in the middle game. The Wildcats fought through a fourth game with 37 sideouts, then took charge in the deciding game with Micaela Young’s six consecutive service points.

Ferris is 5-3, 2-1.

Ferris’ last league loss was Sept. 19, 1997, against Mead. The GSL record is 52 consecutive wins, by Shadle Park in the mid-1980s.

Mt. Spokane has now won four league matches since joining the GSL.

Also in the GSL, Crystal Cochran and Emily Querna both had a kill and a block with the fifth game tied at 10, allowing Lewis and Clark (3-0) to outlast visiting Gonzaga Prep 15-13, 15-9, 7-15, 4-15, 15-10. Cochran also had two kills as LC scored five consecutive points to offset G-Prep’s 8-5 lead in the decider. The Bullpups (2-2) won the third and fourth games by building leads of 11-2 and 7-0. The Tigers won the opener with eight consecutive points spread through six sideouts, then stormed back after trailing the second game 7-0… . Sarah Shogren served eight consecutive points for a 12-9 third-game lead, and finished with nine kills in 15 attempts to guide East Valley (2-2) to a 3-0 win over visiting University (1-3). East Valley also trailed the second game, 11-6… . Amy Meisen-Vehrs served three of her four aces during the same rotation in the second game, and North Central (1-3) took a 3-0 win over visiting Rogers (0-4). NC’s Amy Oates had 14 kills and Rogers’ Sarah Abrahamson had 10… . Mead (2-0) plays a big match at Shadle (3-0) tonight.

Karlie Pein led Colville (3-1) in four categories and had key blocks in the first and third games during a 15-13, 15-6, 15-11 Border League win at Post Falls (2-2). PF led the first game 7-2, but Colville stormed back for a tie, took the lead on a Pein block, and won on Jennifer Mallory’s ace. Kara Pein served nine consecutive points for an 11-2 Indians lead in the third game… . Also in the Border, Zoe Catsiff totaled eight kills and 17 assists to lead Cheney (3-1) to a 3-1 win over visiting Coeur d’Alene (1-3). The Blackhawks won despite injuries to two hitters. CdA’s Lorin Griffits had 12 kills… . Jessica Vasquez had 25 assists and served 19 for 20, and Emily Bennett had 14 kills while serving 13 for 13 as Moscow (3-0) notched a 3-0 sweep of visiting West Valley (1-3)… . Sandpoint (3-0) defeated visiting Lewiston 15-1, 15-7. Kristen Borders had nine digs for the Bengals (0-2).

Amy Chamberlain totaled 10 kills and six aces to rally Pullman (3-1) to an 11-15, 15-3, 15-10, 15-10 win over visiting Riverside (0-2) in the Great Northern League. Riverside led the first game 11-3, gave up eight consecutive points, then scored four straight for the win. Katie Farrell and Kate Murphy combined for 25 Pullman digs… . Also in the GNL, Leah Dahlin had 12 kills and Sam Almond added 34 assists to guide Newport (4-0) to a 3-0 win over visiting Medical Lake (0-2). ML led the first two games 5-0 before the Grizzlies roared back.

Visiting Pasco swept Moses Lake 15-2, 15-12, 15-5 in the Big Nine Conference. No details were reported.

Girls soccer

Brooke Yancey recorded a hat trick in the first 30 minutes and Lacie Wilson added two goals in a 14-minute span, leading Lakeside (4-1-1, 4-0) to a 5-0 win over visiting Deer Park (2-4, 1-3) in the GNL. Wilson has scored in every Eagles match… . Sarah Monroe set up two goals by Jackie McCall, and Leanna Smith stopped two late one-on-one situations to preserve Medical Lake’s 3-0 win over visiting Chewelah (1-5, 0-4). The Cardinals are 2-4-1, 1-3.
