Adams County

Othello

Hundreds of people recently watched the giant ribbon cutting and took tours of the new Columbia Colstor facility. The company says Othello is the ideal location for such a large warehouse - 4,800 square feet. Columbia Colstor employs 35 folks preparing and freezing potatoes and other agricultural products. It hopes to add 10 more jobs in the near future.

Ferry County

Republic

The Republic Ranger District is planning a series of prescribed burns to rid the forest of hazardous fire fuel. Burning will begin next week and run through October. On the burn list is Quartz Mountain, Edds Mountain, Cougar Mountain, Bear Mountain, Golden Harvest Creek, South Fork San Poil, Karamip, Bamber Mountain, Granite Mountain and Rattlesnake Gulch.

Grant County

Moses Lake

The City Council acted on a Soroptimist proposal and named the blue heron the official city bird. An image of the bird will be added to the town’s welcome signs.

Lincoln County

Davenport

Lincoln Hospital, Lincoln Medical Center and the county Health Coalition, will hold a free open house Sept. 28. Health care information booths, facilities tours are on the agenda. The kids can jump in the astro castle, while adults jam to “Bluegrass Review” and dine on roast pig, hamburgers and hotdogs.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The Pend Oreille Conservation District is asking for ideas on how to improve bull trout recovery here. If the majority of landowners in the area agree to specifications set by the state, the conservation district will be eligible for 85 percent reimbursement for the project to protect the fish habitat.

Spokane County

Cheney Parks and Recreation is soliciting exhibitors for the annual Christmas Craft Bazaar Nov. 4 at the Wren Pierson Community Center. Call 235-7295.

Whitman County

Colfax

The city is considering refurbishing Codger Pole. The 10-year-old landmark on Main Street is a 65-foot totem pole commemorating a 1988 touch football match between veteran high school players from St. John and Colfax. The City Council heard one estimate of $12,000 to restore the carved and painted work.

IDAHO

Benewah County

St. Maries

High school sophomore Stephanie Thurston set a course record and took first place in a cross country meet Sept. 6 in Kellogg. Thurston finished the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 44 seconds, which helped the Jacks win.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

A Special Olympics softball team from Sandpoint will compete at Boise’s Willow Lane Athletic Complex in the Special Olympics Idaho Fall Sports Tournament Sept. 29-Oct. 1. A Coeur d’Alene team will also compete.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

Boundary County school trustees will consider how to pay umpires and referees for soccer, baseball and softball during a meeting Tuesday at the school. The last 10 years, the teams have had to raise money to pay the officials while other sports were covered in the school budget.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

The Church of the Nazarene will host Cafe Midweek on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the church, 4000 N. Fourth St. Hamburgers and chips will be served for $2 a person or $6 a family. After-dinner programs are open to everyone.

Latah County

Moscow

The Sierra Club’s Palouse Group will sponsor an easy-to-moderate day hike in the Elk River area today. The hike makes a 4.5 mile loop and hikers may view a giant 3,000-year-old cedar tree or the Elk River Falls. Meet at the north end of Tidyman’s parking lot at 9 a.m. Bring drinking water and lunch.

Wallace

Silver Valley artist Louise Sheppard will direct an acrylic art class at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at the Wallace Arts Center. The class will run through October. Lena Murphy, another local artist, will paint at the center on Sundays and people are encouraged to join her.

Garments created this year with at least 60 percent wool may be entered in the Make it Yourself With Wool district competition Nov. 4 at Ronan High School. Items can be sewn, knitted or woven. A garment of mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel, llama and vicuna may be made with any amount. Registration deadline is Oct. 28. Call Paula Darko Hensler at Libby High School.
