How they scored First quarter

Idaho 7, Washington State 0: Zach Gerstner 36-yard run. Ben Davis kick. Four plays, 69 yards, 1:19. The Vandals took immediate advantage after Washington State kicker Nick Lambert missed a 48-yard field. Willie Alderson went for 12 around the right side. John Welsh found Chris Lacy for 19 yards. And then Gerstner went straight up the middle for the touchdown.

Second quarter

Idaho 7, Washington State 6: Nakoa McElrath 31-yard pass from Jason Gesser. Nick Lambert kick failed. Nine plays, 80 yards, 4:21. Gesser overcame a third-and-16 with a 17-yard pass to Marcus Williams.

Idaho 10, Washington State 6: Davis 50-yard field goal. Four plays, seven yards, 1:54. Washington State’s Deon Burnett coughed up the football at the WSU 35 and Jordan Kramer recovered it to set up the Vandals at the WSU 40. The Vandals went to Alderson three straight times, once through the air and twice on the ground, but could not pick up the first down and settled for a field goal.

Washington State 13, Idaho 10: Marcus Williams 3-yard pass from Gesser. Lambert kick. Ten plays, 81 yards, 3:34. Gesser went up top to his favorite receiver Milton Wynn to start the drive with a 42-yard catch. Wynn came through again later in the drive on a third-and-6 at the Vandal 11. He took a reverse, sliced through traffic and went 7 yards for the first down.

Third quarter

Idaho 17, Washington State 13: Mike Roberg 3-yard pass from John Welsh. Davis kick. Ten plays, 73 yards, 4:09. Welsh once again came through with a big third-down conversion when he found Geoff Franks for a 30-yard completion to the WSU 15.

Washington State 20, Idaho 17: Wynn 33-yard pass from Collin Henderson. Lambert kick. Three plays, 55 yards, :25. Washington State cornerback Marcus Trufant picked off a Welsh pass at Cougars 45 to give WSU solid field position. After a 22-yard run by Deon Burnett, the Cougars called for a reverse pass. Wide receiver Collin Henderson took the handoff on the reverse from Adam Hawkins and found Wynn wide open in the end zone.

Idaho 24, Washington State 20: Alderson 4-yard run. Davis kick. Nine plays, 65 yards, 3:41. With the Vandals stuck with a third-and-7 at their own 38, Welsh found Chris Lacy for a 16-yard gain across the middle to the WSU 46. Welsh later hooked up with Mike Roberg for 20 yards. Jeff Townsley added a 9-yard catch to set up the TD.

Fourth quarter

Washington State 26, Idaho 24: Billy Newman 10-yard interception return. Kick failed. One play, 10 yards. Alan Cox pinned the Vandals on their own 1-yard line with a 42-yard punt and the Cougars responded with the interception and returned it for a touchdown.

Idaho 31, Washington State 26: Ethan Jones 13-yard pass from Welsh. Davis kick. Nine plays, 66 yards, 3:45. Alderson chewed up 40 yards on five rushes as the Idaho offensive line began to assert itself.

Washington State 34, Idaho 31: Gesser 7-yard run. Two-point conversion good. Ten plays, 78 yards, 4:13. After a silent first half, David Minnich was inserted into the game and broke free for 7 and 8-yard runs on the right side. Adam Hawkins took over when Minnich lost a shoe and went around the left side for 10 yards to set up a first and goal at the Idaho 9.

Idaho 38, Washington State 34: Welsh 1-yard run. Davis kick. Ten plays, 57 yards, 2:21. The Cougars finally stopped the Vandals a yard sort on a third down, but a defensive holding penalty gave Idaho new life at the WSU 41. From there Welsh connected on a 22-yard pass to Chris Lacy and a 12-yarder to Alderson to set up the game-winning touchdown.
