WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Volunteers are needed to plant more than 1,000 willow trees at the Columbia National Wildllife Refuge. As a National Public Lands Days celebration, families and groups are invited to the tree-planting activity Saturday. They will focus on replanting willows along Crab Creek. Ferry County Republic

Trina Olson, a 1996 Curlew High School graduate, has been commissioned as a Washington State Patrol trooper patrolling the Grand Coulee area. She recently completed the 25-week WSP basic training course at the state academy. Olson isn’t the only member of her family sporting a badge. Husband Sam is a Ferry County sheriff’s deputy.

Grant County Warden

A hay fire last week at Roylance Farms not only burned tons of hay, and two sheds, but 45 calves were lost in the blaze. Damage has been estimated at $500,000 and there is no word on how the fire started. The Roylance brothers, who also own a dairy farm near Moses Lake, were insured.

Lincoln County Davenport

The last full-time police officer in the Davenport Police Department has resigned. Mike Sullivan is taking a job in the Grand Coulee area, leaving the local force with a handful of reserve officers to fill shifts. Sullivan was recently reinstated to the Davenport force after a nearly three-year wrongful termination legal battle.

Pend Oreille County Newport

The City Council approved sewer extensions to property owned by County Commissioner Joel Jacobsen on the edge of town. The city agreed to extend services to Jacobsen’s land with a conditional provision for annexation. Jacobsen hopes to develop the lots into a housing subdivision.

Spokane County Cheney

The Eastern Washington University Girls’ Chorus for girls age 9 to 14 is holding auditions for the 2000-2001 season through Oct. 3. The chorus works with EWU music students under the direction of Lynn Brinckmeyer, chair of the EWU Music Department, and performs throughout the greater Spokane area. Stevens County Colville

Erica Spurgeon isn’t a rocket scientist - yet. The local class of 2000 graduate recently returned from a two-month internship at NASA. Spurgeon worked on the Cassini Project at the Pasadena Jet Propulsion Lab. The Cassini Project is a probe that will travel to Titan, a moon of Saturn, to gather information. She will return to NASA annually for internships until she receives a degree.

Whitman County Pullman

A free legal seminar on landlord-tenant law starts at 7 p.m. today at the Fairmont Center, 350 S.E. Fairmont Road. The event is sponsored by the Community Action Center, Whitman County Bar Association and the Community Action Housing Assistance Program. To register or for more information, call 509-334-9147.

Benewah County Plummer

School District news: Lakeside Elementary student pictures will be taken today; Lakeside Middle School’s volleyball team will play the St. Maries seventh-grade team today; and the Lady Knights volleyball team will have a home game against Potlatch at 6 tonight.

Bonner County Sandpoint

A beginner’s Master Gardener workshop will be offered by the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension System. The workshop provides in-depth instruction in home horticulture. Master Gardeners answer questions, organize volunteer activities and develop special horticultural programs. Registration ($70) deadline is Oct. 31.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Jamie Dockins was high-point winner of the Boundary County Open Horse Show. First-place winners were Meghan Sappington in senior working Western pleasure, Bruce Merrifield in junior Western pleasure, Kristan Noel in the 17 and under trail category, Mary Hayden in the halter fillies class, Mikkel Becker in Western pleasure 17 and under, and Debbie Dahlberg in rookie reining, freestyle reining and trail 18 and over.

Kootenai County Post Falls

The local Little League organization has approximately 600 softball, baseball and T-ball players. If the organization is to continue, it needs parents to volunteer now. Only eight people attended the meeting held in September for the annual nominations and elections. The meeting was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Post Falls Middle School.

Latah County Moscow

The Missoula Children’s Theater production of “Sleeping Beauty” will be performed at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Moscow High School. It’s an original adaptation of the classic fairy tale, but Sleeping Beauty wakes to find herself in a rock ‘n’ roll dream. Tickets are available at Bookpeople; $6 adults, $4 children.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Joe Proto resigned his position as city councilman in a letter to the city recently. Mayor Roger Mangum encourages residents interested in applying for the position to submit a letter to him indicating their interest and qualifications. Letters of interest may be left at the city clerk’s office, 323 Main St.

Lincoln County Libby

The Libby Area Development Company Inc. will host a meeting at 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 4 at City Hall. The company’s board of directors is responsible for determining how $8 million will be used for economic development. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their ideas.
