Victorious Vandals Apologize

University of Idaho’s verbal volley following Saturday’s 38-34 football win over Washington State took on a different tone Tuesday.

The Vandals said they were sorry.

Head coach Tom Cable and quarterback John Welsh issued public statements apologizing for Welsh’s postgame comments.

Welsh criticized some WSU players for not shaking hands after the game, calling the Cougars “bad sports, I guess. Hey, they lost. They can go to their locker room and go cry. I don’t care what the hell they do.”

Welsh released a statement Tuesday: “As a leader on this team, I would like to apologize for my postgame comments. They in no way reflect what this program is about. I simply let my emotions get away from me and that is unacceptable.

“One of the things I have been coached to do is stay flat-lined emotionally during the game and it is something I need to do postgame as well.”

Cable’s statement read, in part: “It is my responsibility to teach these guys how to act and speak responsibly, win or lose.”

Cable said Welsh won’t face additional punishment.

Cable talked with WSU coach Mike Price on Monday, but the topic wasn’t the postgame comments.

“He’s classy,” Cable said. “I have a world of respect for that guy.”

BSU flying high, flying low

Boise State thumped Central Michigan 47-10 Saturday, but it was the trip to Mt. Pleasant on which the Broncos set records - records for travel follies.

The team flew commercial Friday. They were preparing for departure from Chicago when a bubble was found in the pilot’s oxygen tank. They sat on the runway for a couple hours.

Saturday, they bused from Midland, Mich., to Mt. Pleasant. One bus driver said the trip would take 30 minutes, the other driver said an hour. It took about 75 minutes to reach the stadium.

Once there, the bus driver didn’t know the location of the visitors’ locker room. BSU coach Dirk Koetter asked the driver to stop in front of the stadium. The team exited and approached a women taking tickets. She politely told the travel party they had to walk around the corner to another entrance. Koetter politely said no chance.

The team waltzed through the turnstiles (perhaps boosting the attendance count), walked down through the bleachers, across the playing field to their dressing room.

“If we can make it within three hours of when we’re supposed to (return to Boise), it’s going to be a world record,” Koetter said after the game.
