Workshop Will Focus On Composting Basics

From Staff Reports

The West Central Community Center and the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System have a free program that can reduce garbage bills and yard and garden expenses.

A Saturday workshop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community center will detail the basics of composting. There will be videos, hands-on demonstrations and working models of the one-bin composting system and the more-elaborate worm composting process.

“This composting workshop is the first neighborhood-based composting program in Spokane,” said Ann Bailor, spokeswoman for the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.

“The community centers are an excellent arena for this kind of demonstration and fall is a great time to start.”

Participants are invited to bring a bag of yard waste so the group can build a working compost pile as one of the activities.

Composting yard and kitchen vegetable waste can reduce household waste in the average home by up to 30 percent, allowing homeowners to pay less for garbage service.

Also, compost improves soil and reduces the need for artificial fertilizers and soil amendments.

Attendees will receive a free composting bin.
