Colombian police arrest suspected plotters
BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombian police on Saturday arrested two suspected rebels carrying four grenades and pencil-drawn blueprints of the presidential palace and other government sites.
The men, both 18, were apparently planning attacks on the presidential palace at the halfway point in President Alvaro Uribe’s four-year term, said Gen. Hector Garcia of Colombia’s National Police in Bogota.
The men also had blueprints of the Congress building when arrested in Bogota, Garcia said.
It was the second time in three days that Bogota authorities have caught suspected rebels they say were plotting attacks in the run-up to the second anniversary of Uribe’s term on Aug. 7. On Thursday, police arrested five suspected urban guerrillas and seized 1,650 pounds of explosives from them.
