Few subject of documentary
Gonzaga University head men’s basketball coach Mark Few will be the subject of a documentary titled “Before the Bigs” to air Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Northwest.
Few’s segment is one of 13 episodes being aired. The show launched this past March with 19 original episodes on members of the Seattle Mariners organization, and has been expanded to include other Northwest Sports personalities. The documentary traces Few’s roots back to his hometown of Cresswell, Ore., and follows his career.
Basketball
Former Gonzaga University men’s players John Rillie and Paul Rogers are among the 12-man Australian squad that will play in the Athens Olympics.
Rillie is best remembered for his 96 points in three WCC tournament games in 1995 that propelled the Bulldogs to their inaugural WCC Tournament crown and with it their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Rogers played for the Bulldogs from 1995-97, foregoing his final season to enter the NBA draft where he was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. He never signed with the Lakers and the Toronto Raptors obtained his rights, but he never played a regular-season game with the Raptors.
“In the seventh year of the Washington State Senior Games, Papermill Printing is again champion in 3-on-3 basketball.
The 50-54-year-old Papermill team won its seventh straight title and its 55-59 team won for the fourth straight year.
Papermill Printing’s 50-54 team of Jack Soliday, Dan Steward, Jim Preston and Ron Cox won four straight games, including 53-24 in the final against Kent.
The team beat Kent 24-13 and Gray’s Harbor 38-24 in pool play and beat Olympia 38-13 in the semifinals.
The 55-59 team of Jon Heimbigner, Jim Bresnahan, Bill Maxey and Dave Pounds beat another Spokane team, made up of Ray Stein, Jim House, Ted Nealey, Terry Nealey and Len Long, 34-24 in the championship.
Heimbigner has played for a Papermill Printing team all seven years.
College scene
Former Washington State standout golfer Jon Reehorn has been named assistant golf coach at the University of Washington. As a senior in 2002, Reehorn was a second-team, All-Pacific-10 Conference selection, helping WSU to its only NCAA Regional Championships appearance in history. He was selected to the PING All-Pacific Region team that year as one of the region’s top 15 players.
“Gonzaga University soccer player Annie Hawkins was recently selected to the United States Adult Soccer Association National Select Team after competing in the Olympic Sports Festival in mid-July. Hawkins and her twin sister, Sarah, played for Region IV representing the State of Washington in the week-long event. Annie was then selected to the USASA Women’s National Amateur Team that squared off with the Australian Women’s Olympic Team at Uihlein Park in Milwaukee.
“Three members of the Washington State University women’s golf team were named to the 2003-04 Division I National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar team earlier this month.
Maria Kostina, a senior psychology major, Jay-Lee Longbottom, a senior psychology major, and Stephanie Parsley, a junior secondary education major, were among 318 women named to the team.
“Kirk Nelson will join the Washington State athletic family for the 2004 season as an assistant soccer coach where his primary responsibilities will be working on the day-to-day operations of the program and serving as the recruiting coordinator.
Nelson comes to the Palouse from Phoenix., where he coached several different levels of women’s soccer, including serving as the head varsity coach of the team that won the high school 5A state championship in 2004.

Officiating
The Inland Empire Football Officials Association will hold its first organizational meeting of the year on Aug. 9 at the Gonzaga University School of Law Building, second-floor classroom. The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. for last year’s apprentices and new officials for this year. The veteran officials will meet at 6:30.
Anyone interested in becoming a football official is urged to attend. The association is again in need of new officials.
The association supplies officials for 32 high schools, 32 middle schools, as well as the YMCA Grid Kids and SYSA programs.
A mandatory Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s State Rules Clinic meeting for all officials and coaches will be held at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 16 at East Valley High School.
