Area students honored for conference participation

The Spokesman-Review

Five local students were honored at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Denver in July. Every year individuals and teams are encouraged to compete in a wide range of events focused on business and leadership development. Nearly 7,000 youths attended this year’s conference.

Jenna Osterwyk, who graduated from Central Valley High School in June, placed seventh in the job interview competition. She prepared a letter of application and resume, completed an application and participated in interviews to earn her spot in the standings.

The sixth-place award in Web site development was given to Jefferson So, Jason Wurz and Spenser Hackney, all juniors at Central Valley High School. The trio was given the task of creating a Web site for a fictitious company.

Zachary Brown, a junior at University High School, placed 10th in a contest that tested proficiency in developing computer programs in Visual Basic.

Each category included about 100 competitors. Only students who were winners in their home state’s competition in each category could participate in the national contests.

Local teacher elected

Retired teacher Bill Marvin was recently elected president of the Washington State School Retirees Association when the group had its convention in Wenatchee. The organization has a membership of about 16,000 and works to improve retirement for all school employees.

Marvin, 66, retired from the Central Valley School District 12 years ago. He taught vocal music, social studies and math at Greenacres and Evergreen middle schools. He was a teacher for 30 years and spent 29 of those years in Central Valley.

His term as president will last one year.

University cites St. George’s students

Sixteen students at St. George’s School have been recognized by the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University for outstanding performance on two challenging academic tests.

The students participated in a nationwide CTY Talent Search after scoring at the 97th percentile or higher on school standardized tests. They then took additional above-grade-level exams to identify the brightest learners.

Four of St. George’s fifth- and sixth-grade students were honored by CTY as top scorers on the PLUS Academic Abilities Assessment. The students are Kaitlyn Cambensy, Austin Henderson, Mattie Orme and Carson Ramsden.

While 4,800 students nationwide were recognized by CTY, including 30 in Eastern Washington, the St. George’s students were the only Spokane-area students honored for scoring in the top third of all CTY participants taking the PLUS assessment.

St. George’s also had 12 students named SAT Award Recipients for their performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test as seventh- and eighth-graders.

They are Sam Annan, John Cambareri, Michael Campareri, Mark Cassell, Leslie Cohen, Colleen Culbertson, Grant Evans, Hayden Heftel, Janet Hong, Emma Perkins, Kylie Sago and Nate Wynn. The students scored in the top 25 percent compared to all CTY Talent Search participants taking the college SAT.

Michael Cambareri also was named a National Mathematics Talent Search Award Recipient. The honor is given to students scoring at least 700 (out of 800 possible) on the mathematics section of the college SAT exam before the age of 13.
