Summer lunch program benefits low-income families

The 2004 Summer Meals Program continues through Aug. 20 at many elementary, middle and high schools as well as community centers and several parks. All sites serve lunch, some also serve breakfast.

Spokane Public Schools has sponsored the Summer Meals Program for kids since 1989. All children 18 years and younger are eligible. There is no registration or fee and children may come every day or any days the meals are offered.

Parents are encouraged to come with their children, and they may bring their own meal but can’t eat any of their child’s meal.

This is a federally funded child nutrition program that feeds children during the summertime, when school is out and children don’t have access to school meals.

The program was created to ensure that children in low-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacations.

For information about meal sites and specific mealtimes, call the Nutrition Services Department at 354-7270, or visit http://www.spokaneschools.org/Menus/Summer.stm.

Havermale High School and River Park Square team up and receive international recognition

Havermale High School at River Park Square has been selected as a finalist in the International Council of Shopping Center’s MAXI awards, an international award honoring excellence in shopping center marketing.

The collaborative retail education program was named one of 12 finalists in the community relations category among 354 entries.

Twenty-one students graduated in June from Havermale High School at River Park Square, which began last fall. The program offers students hands-on training in retail education and offers River Park Square retailers a pool of qualified applicants for possible hire.

The curriculum was created by an advisory board of store managers, mall management and school district staff and designed to develop professional skills for interviewing, merchandise marketing and other basic retail industry-related abilities.

The winner of the MAXI award will be announced Sept. 27 at the International Council of Shopping Centers annual fall conference in San Antonio.
