Was Gregory Hines married to Bernadette Peters?

Evelyn Green King Features Syndicate

Q: My question concerns Gregory Hines, the actor who died last year. Was he once married to (film and stage star) Bernadette Peters? And did they have children? Thank you. — L.H.

A: Gregory Hines was married and divorced twice, and had children with both wives — neither of whom was Bernadette Peters.

Interestingly enough, just a few months before Hines died in late 2003, he co-hosted that year’s Tony Awards with Peters, whom he considered a close friend and colleague.

Q: I read that Jennifer Lopez wants to remarry her new husband, Marc Anthony, in a Catholic church ceremony. How can this be, since she has already been married twice? And wasn’t he also married before? — Teresa H.

A: Lopez, whose previous marriages to Cris Judd and Ojani Noa ended in divorce, married Marc Anthony just four days after his divorce from his first wife was final.

Apparently, or so I’m told, in order for her to remarry Anthony in the Catholic Church, she would have to have her first two marriages annulled, possibly on the grounds that the ceremonies were not recognized as valid in the eyes of the church.

But even then, there’s the matter of Anthony’s marital history, which could present a problem, since he and his first wife renewed their wedding vows in 2001 in a cathedral in Puerto Rico, an act that might be perceived as intent to have their union blessed by the church.

Q: What is the wonderful Christine Lahti doing these days? — Frances McG.

A: The wonderful (and I agree with your choice of adjectives) Christine Lahti is starring in the upcoming WB series “Jack and Bobby.” She’ll be playing a single mother who raises her sons, Jack and Bobby, with the sort of love and determination that shapes their lives and leads to one of them ultimately becoming one of the great presidents of the United States in the 21st century.

Q: In the movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” who was the actor who replaced the late Richard Harris as Prof. Dumbledore, and where did I see him without that long white beard? — Lisa C.

A: Dublin-born actor Sir Michael Gambon replaced fellow Irishman Richard Harris in the role of the all-wise Dumbledore. He will also play the role in the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

Gambon has starred in a number of noteworthy films and TV productions, including “Angels in America” (film), “Inspector Maigret” (series) and the miniseries “Longitude.” His major breakthrough for American audiences was in the 1986 miniseries “The Singing Detective,” in which he played a man wracked with a painful skin disease who hallucinates scenes in which he sings and dances with the hospital staff.
