Lowdown

The youth movement is in full bloom here with the departures of John Randle and Norman Hand (and Chad Eaton before 2003). Cedric Woodard became a factor as last season wore on and he eventually replaced Hand as a starter. Rashad Moore joined the rotation near midseason and finished with 30 tackles. Woodard and Moore helped bolster Seattle’s rush defense, which gave up 152.6 yards per game in 2002 but just 109.9 last season. First-round draft pick Marcus Tubbs made an impressive debut Monday, driving Pro Bowl guard Marco Rivera back into Brett Favre for a sack. Tubbs and Woodard are University of Texas products. Rocky Bernard saw his tackles (49 to 16) and sacks (4 to 2) drop considerably from 2002 to 2003. Can he bounce back? Seattle kept nine linemen, including ends, a year ago. Woodard, Moore and Tubbs are locks, and perhaps Bernard. High energy rookie Craig Terrill is probably next in line if the team keeps five tackles.

Fast fact

Woodard and Moore, the probable first-game starters, have one combined career sack.

Quote

“Rashad came through for us last year, we drafted Tubbs and we re-signed Woodard so we have some guys in there now that have some beef.” _ Coach Mike Holmgren.
