Rain again at NEC Invitational
David Toms finished his first round Friday morning with a double bogey. By the end of another day cut short by rain at the NEC Invitational at Akron, Ohio, it wasn’t the worst thing that could have happened.
Dropping two shots gave him an earlier start for the second round, and Toms finished his 4-under 66 just ahead of a downpour that made Firestone South unplayable and left Toms as the clubhouse leader.
He was at 5-under 135, although still three shots behind Stewart Cink.
Cink played eight holes in the morning for a 7-under 63. He was at 8 under and facing a 25-foot birdie putt downstream on the 11th hole when play was suspended.
The PGA Tour decided to wait until the first round was completed before issuing new tee times, and only 24 players finished the second round. It shouldn’t matter by the end of the week. The forecast was for dry, cool weather the final two days.
Four-way tie at Reno-Tahoe Open
Scott McCarron made four birdies in 12 holes, moving into a four-way tie for the lead in the second round of the Reno-Tahoe Open at Reno, Nev., before thunderstorms forced play to be suspended.
Rookie Vaughn Taylor, Daniel Chopra, Michael Allen and McCarron shared the lead at 7 under. Like McCarron, each had at least four more holes to play at Montreux Golf and Country Club.
More than four hours of rain delays forced half the 132-player field to complete the first round early Friday. About half the field had not started the second round late Friday due of more delays.
Pettersen holds one-shot lead
Suzann Pettersen sidestepped a persistent downpour and a long list of challengers to take a one-shot lead at the Wendy’s Championship for Children at Dublin, Ohio.
More than an inch of rain pounded the Tartan Fields Golf Club throughout the day, suspending play late in the afternoon.
The 69 players waited for another 90 minutes before play was again called off. They will return to finish the second round early today.
Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., is at 141 with Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho at 149.

Moore will oppose Jeff Overton in today’s semifinals.
In the other semifinal, Chris Nallen of Hackettstown, N.J., plays Luke List of Ringgold, Ga.
The 36-hole final is Sunday.
