7 killed in typhoon

TOKYO – A tropical storm surged toward Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Tuesday after killing seven people and flooding hundreds of homes.

Typhoon Chaba was downgraded to a tropical storm overnight after leaving behind a path of wreckage including 1,561 flooded homes and 127 houses that were partially or completely torn apart by powerful winds and heavy rain. Police said 152 people were hurt.
